Crawford fans 16 as Panthers defeat SM

Jared Crawford struck out 16 batters and limited Smoky Mountain to three hits last Thursday as Franklin took an 11-1 Mountain Athletic Conference baseball victory at the SM field.

“Jared Crawford pretty much had us under control,” Coach Ron Yount said. “He kept us from being able to swing the bats effectively, and they got some timely hits.”

The Panthers scored an earned run in the first on Ben Savaiko’s RBI single.

Bryan Bell and Chris Lequire had RBI singles in the second for a 3-0 advantage.

Bell singled in a pair of runs in the third upping the margin to 5-0.

Cheyenne Carson’s infield out drove in a run for a 6-0 lead in the fifth.

A double by Jon Brown and Savaiko’s infield out produced two runs in the sixth for an 8-0 advantage.

Franklin concluded its scoring in the seventh on Carson’s three-run homer.

Crawford, who walked one and hit two batters, had his no-hit bid broken up in the fourth by Grant Schallock’s single.

Schallock was hit by a pitch in the seventh, reached second on a wild pitch and scored SM’s lone run on C.J. Junaluska’s single.

Crawford had three hits in four at-bats. Bell was two of two, and Lequire was two of four.

The Mustangs fell to 3-3 overall and in the MAC.

Matt Hawkins (1-2), who pitched the first three innings, took the loss.
