Tuscola holds off SM for MAC softball win
Tuscola scored three runs in each of the first two innings en route to an 11-6 Mountain Athletic Conference softball victory over Smoky Mountain on March 15 at Webster.
“We fell behind, but we battled back and didn’t quit,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “We’re still hitting the ball. We only had two strikeouts so we’re putting the ball in play. We’re also getting some extra base hits.”
The Lady Mustangs committed four errors in the first two innings helping Tuscola take a 6-1 lead. SM had 10 errors in the game.
Big hits for Tuscola in the early going were a triple by Jennifer Pitts in the first and her double in the second.
The Lady Mustangs scored in the bottom of the first as Cassie Randall doubled and came home on an error.
Randall’s RBI double cut the gap to 6-2 in the third.
Errors continued to be a factor as SM committed three in the fourth when Tuscola scored three times and three more in the sixth for two runs.
Savannah Bumgarner doubled in two runs for the Lady Mustangs in the fourth. Ameka Buchanan had tripled and stayed at third on Ashlee Stephens’ infield single.
Buchanan singled in the sixth, advanced on a passed ball and Stephens’ sacrifice and scored on Chelsea Elders’ single.
Pitts and Ashley Steinel both had two hits for the Lady Mountaineers.
Randall paced the SM offense with three hits in four at-bats. Buchanan was two of four.
Pitts was the winning pitcher.
Rachel Stewman was the starting pitcher for the Lady Mustangs and was relieved by Megan Taylor.
