MARCH OF DIMES WalkAmerica will be Saturday, April 2. Registration will be at 9 a.m. at the CCB parking lot on Main Street. Walkers will leave at 10 a.m.

THE OLD SCHOOL ANTIQUE MALL will open for the season on Friday, April 1. The shops will be open daily except Mondays in the historic schoolhouse that dates from 1939. Some 70 antique dealers from all across the nation exhibit and sell a wide range of collectibles there. A different collection will be featured each month in the front entryway. ATTENTION ARTISTS: Help is needed in the design of art studio/retail spaces in a new building in Jackson County. All artists are invited to a meeting today (Thursday) at 6 p.m. in Gallery One in downtown Sylva to discuss what these spaces might look like and need. RACHEL DEBNAM of Morganton, formerly of Sylva, is among the high school seniors chosen to receive Morehead Scholarships from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Worth some $80,000, the scholarship covers all tuition and fees as well as the cost of a computer and summer enrichment programs. A senior at Freedom High School, Debnam is the daughter of Jennifer Debnam of Morganton and the late Ritch Debnam. She is the granddaughter of Jim and Joyce Evans of Sylva.
FEATURED SONGWRITERS at the next “Songwriters in the Round” at Balsam Mountain Inn will be Tim Buppert, Jerry Vandiver and Will Nance along with vocalist Holly Hefner. Buppert has written songs for John and Audrey Wiggins, Continental Divide, Yankee Grey and Kevin Sharpe, and has sung on albums for Trisha Yearwood and Paul Brandt. Vandiver, a 19-year veteran of the Nashville music industry, has written for such acts as Tim McGraw, Lee Greenwood, Barbara Mandrell and Phil Vassar. Nance penned George Strait’s hit “Round About Way” and received a BMI Award for “Cool To Be a Fool,” recorded by Joe Nichols. He has also written songs for Diamond Rio, Craig Morgan, Neal McCoy and Brad Paisley. Hefner has been the opening act for such artists as Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Lorrie Morgan and Keith Urban. The evening includes a gourmet dinner buffet and the session begins at 7:30 p.m. Cover charge is $7 per person, plus dinner (about $24-$27). Reservations are encouraged at (828) 456-9498. |
