Shirley Shuler
Shirley Broom Shuler, 68, of Frosty Ridge Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at New Hope Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Mike Moore and Earl Holden officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jody Shuler, Craig Baker, Steven Broom, Chuck Keefer, David Shuler and Mike Hoyle. Honorary pallbearer was Brandon Wilson.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a machine operator with Buster Brown. She enjoyed crocheting and reading.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Broom, and one granddaughter.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Daniel Shuler Sr.; her parents, Frank and Beulah Shelton Broom of Sylva; two daughters, Sharon Keefer of Sylva and Jeanette Jones of Whittier; one son, Daniel Andy Shuler Jr. of Sylva; one sister, Helen Parker of Sylva; one brother, Mike Broom of Sylva; and four grandchildren.
Julia Fisher
Julia Mae Corn Fisher, 92, of Asheville, died Sunday, March 20, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, in Newbridge Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Clark Henderson and Keith Edwards officiating. Burial was in West Memorial Park.
She was born Oct. 11, 1912 in Madison County, and was a graduate of Woodfin High School. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for the family business, Fisher Electric Company. She enjoyed cooking. She was a daughter of the late Rev. James and Adeline Treadway Corn.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William Hilliard “Tood” Fisher who died in 2000, and two sisters, Vickie Metcalf and Donnie Brigman.
Surviving are one daughter, Martha Jenkins of Morganton; one son, James Henry “Jim” Fisher of Cullowhee; one sister, Augusta Self of Asheville; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Ottis Taylor
Ottis Doyle Taylor, 75, of Thornville, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Heartland Fairfield Nursing Center.
Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in the chapel of Boring-Sheridan Funeral Home with Pastor Kyle Miller officiating.
He was born July 14, 1929, in Cullowhee, and was a graduate of Cullowhee High School. He was an active member of the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Millersport, Ohio. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, retired from B&L Motor Freight in 1992 and a teamster of Local 637 of Zanesville, Ohio. He enjoyed bowling, fly fishing, pool, gardening and traveling. He was a son of the late Ottis C. and Lela West Taylor.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Harrell Taylor, and one brother and one sister, who died in infancy.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Mary Taylor; two daughters, Sherry Clagg of Ona, W.Va., and Donna Walters of Thornville; two sons, Mark Taylor and Barry Taylor, both of Thornville; three brothers, Clarence Taylor, Lenore Taylor and Dennis Taylor; and four grandchildren.

Dan Yeomans
Daniel “Dan” Yeomans, 66, of Franklin, died Saturday, March 19, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Victory Baptist Church in Sylva, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating. Burial was in Palms Memorial Park, Sarasota, Fla.
A native of Montrose, Pa., he was a retired electrical contractor. He had formerly served on the board of directors for the Sarasota Youth for Christ and was a past trustee of Grace Baptist Church in Sarasota. He was a son of the late Hubert and Anita Carlsen Yeomans, and was also preceded in death by three brothers.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Janet “Jan” Yeomans; one son, Greg Yeomans of Sarasota; one daughter, Kimberly Marler of Bradenton, Fla.; four sisters, June Johns of Merritt Island, Fla., Betty Chalker of Montrose, and Carolyn Mae Yeomans and Bonnie Yeomans, both of Sarasota; and two granddaughters.

Tommy Sutton
Tommy Carl Sutton, 74, of Sylva’s Savannah community, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Dan Stiles and Bill Sutton officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were John W. Cabe, Keith Messer, Gary Thurlow, Jerry Gant, Franky Cabe, Joe Buchanan and Paul Cowan.
A native of Jackson County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War. He was retried from the Department of Transportation and was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church. He was a son of the late David and Mae Buchanan Sutton.
Surviving are one son, Tommy William Sutton of Sylva; one brother, Guy W. Sutton of Sylva; two sisters, Bobbie S. Messer and Gladys S. Cabe; and one grandson.

Bob Oliver
Dr. Bob Oliver, 75, of Tucson, Ariz, formerly of Sylva, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, after a long battle with cancer.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at Sunstone Healing Center in Tucson.
He was born in Denver, Colo., in January, 1930. He attended Tucson High School and the University of Arizona. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School and later specialized in OB/GYN. He practiced medicine in Tucson, American Samoa, Guam, Alabama and North Carolina. He received a Ph.D. in Human Sexuality and was a Gestalt and sex therapist who was involved with the Sexual Attitude Reassessment program. He served on the boards of directors for the Association for Pre- & Perinatal Psychology and Health and the Pocket Sanctuary of Tumacacori, Ariz.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Kurtin; three daughters, Brooke Oliver of San Francisco, Nadia Oliver-Kurtin and Kai Oliver-Kurtin, both of Wilmington; one brother, William S. Oliver of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and one granddaughter.

J.R. Sutton
James Robert “J.R.” Sutton, 67, of Skyland Drive, Sylva, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 20, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Moore and Clemmey Queen officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Tony Sutton, Jack Sutton, Ronnie Sutton, Bobby Reagan, Bobby Burns, Bill Aiken, Joe Cogdill and Ray Sutton.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a self-employed carpenter and painter. He was a member of The Church of Christ and attended New Hope Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Fred and Nora Gibson Sutton.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Sutton, and one sister, Doris Green.
Surviving are one son, James Brian Sutton of Sylva; two daughters, Nora Sutton Myers and Janet Hoff, both of Sylva; four sisters, Ruth Lyons, Birdie Buchanan, Rachel Cogdill and Ruby Bumgarner, all of Sylva; and four grandchildren.
Thomas Kinsland
Thomas A. Kinsland, 81, of Franklin, died Thursday, March 17, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 21, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home with the Rev. Wesley Price officiating. Burial was in Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.
Pallbearers were Clyde Scott, Tommy Curtis, Ronnie Mason, Harold Scott, Ray Sanders and Jack Dockery.
A native of Jackson County, he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Europe during World War II. He worked for Southern Bell for more than 25 years in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., before retiring to Franklin for the last 25 years. He was a son of the late Thomas and Gertrude Crawford Kinsland.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Grady and Fred Kinsland.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betty Reed Kinsland; one son, Thomas C. Kinsland of Gainesville, Fla.; two daughters, Patricia Allen of Deerfield Beach, Fla. and Betty Ann Welch of Franklin; one brother, Clyde Kinsland of Franklin; and two grandchildren.

Estalee Melton
Estalee Keener Melton, 74, of Arrowood Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Kenneth Rhinehart and Charles Dean officiating. Burial was in Sutton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eddie Earwood, Andy Jones, Mathew Melton, Billy Melton Jr., Anthony Melton and Jamie Melton.
A native of Madison County, she had lived in Jackson County for the past 44 years. She had worked as a bread maker for Western Sizzlin Steak House, was a founding member of Balsam Ridge Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, canning and cooking. She was a daughter of the late Robert and Lilly Strickland Keener.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William Stuart Melton Sr., who died in 1978, and two sons, Scotty and Eddie Melton.
Surviving are one daughter, Marilyn Mull of Sylva; three sons, Billy Melton, Stuart Melton and Steve Melton, all of Sylva; two sisters, Evelyn Cutshaw of Canton and Louise Shuler of Clyde; one brother, Carl Keener of Clyde; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Fannie Greene
Fannie Hooper Greene, 98, of East Hall Heights, Sylva, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Ensley Adult Care after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Johnny Norris and Clifford Parker officiating. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John A. Sutton, Rob Sutton, Ron Sutton, Chris Greene, Michael Justice and Justin Steele.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she enjoyed cooking for children in her neighborhood and gardening. She was the last of seven children of the late Leon and Clara Stephens Hooper.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John H. Greene; three brothers, Tom, Huff and Paul; three sisters, Lyda, Mary Jane and Wilma Mae; and one infant son, Darryl.
Surviving are one daughter, Wanda Sutton of Sylva; one son, Paul Howard Greene of Sylva; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Edith Passmore
Edith Picklesimer Passmore, 99, of Cashiers, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating. Burial was in Upper Zachary Cemetery.
She was born in Whiteside Cove on Feb. 23, 1906, and was a graduate of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, where she received a teaching degree. She taught school prior to her marriage to J.C. Passmore in 1931. Together with her husband she owned and operated a general store in Cashiers for 40 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a breast cancer survivor. She enjoyed gardening. She was a daughter of the late Dewitt and Shellie Miller Picklesimer.
She was also preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Shellie P. Hutchinson; four brothers, Wilbur Picklesimer, Edison Picklesimer, DeRoy Picklesimer and Harry Picklesimer; and two sisters, Canty Edwards and Greta Edwards.
Surviving are one daughter, Margaret P. Glance of Winston-Salem; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Johnny Beck
Johnny Ray Beck, 75, of Old Settlement Road, Sylva, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 21, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Farmer and Cecil Frady officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Carrol Hall, Lonnie Jamison, Jerry Melton, David Frizzell, Larry Beck and Travis Davis.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Dayco Southern after 39 years and also served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school classes for 42 years and was a deacon. He enjoyed studying the Bible and gardening. He was a son of the late John C. and Margaret Buchanan Beck.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Gene Beck; and two sisters, Jessie Mae Webb and Jeston Frady.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Irene Angel Beck; one son, Denis Beck of Sylva; one daughter, Marilyn Beck of Kennesaw, Ga.; one brother, Sam F. Beck of Sylva; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Jack Green
William “Jack” Green, 73, of Anchorage, Alaska, died unexpectedly Friday, March 18, 2005, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Lloyd Fish officiating. Burial was in Addie Cemetery.
Born June 8, 1931, in Sylva, he graduated from Sylva High School in 1949. He worked in Detroit, Mich., until he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He was stationed in Anchorage until his discharge in 1954 and continued to live there until the time of his death. He owned and operated a wholesale toy business until his retirement in 1990.
He was an ordained deacon and a member of First Baptist Church, Anchorage and was part of Baptist mission work throughout Alaska and served a term as president of the Alaska Baptist Convention, during which he archived records for the convention. He was a Mission Service Corps volunteer, supporting a partnership between Georgia and Alaska Baptists. He enjoyed flying and was a recreational pilot for more than 42 years. He was the son of Ode and Minnie Allman Green.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Naomi Hooper Green; one daughter, Cozette Green of Anchorage; one son, Clayton Green of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Nell Sanford of Sylva.
