Spring brings change to TWSA, commissioners

This week’s dreary weather may make it hard to believe our calendars, but rebirth and new growth are certainly in the air at the Justice Center and Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority.

Tuesday night saw the elevation of first-term Commissioner Brian McMahan to that board’s chariman, and Monday was the first day of the tenure of Joe Cline as director of TWSA.

Both would seem to have what it takes to succeed. Cline and McMahan seem to share some qualities. Both are plain-spoken and down-to-earth. They seem eager to get on with the challenges ahead, and they seem to have the support of their respective boards.

McMahan was the only nominee for the commissioners’ post and was elected unanimously by county Democrats, with his fellow commissioners (Roberta Crawford, Eddie Madden and Joe Cowan) in the front row leading the cheers.

Cline, a Tennessee transplant, was chosen from 17 who applied to succeed Hugh Montgomery. He has 20 years’ experience in water and sewer and has had success in writing grants, a source of funding TWSA leaders need to expand their aging system.

Neither will have an easy row to hoe, with TWSA facing a major overhaul and commissioners struggling with land use issues and ongoing conflict over the Economic Development Commission and the Airport Authority.

We wish them success, both for their own and the county’s sakes.
