031705wittekindtSMHS senior Wittekind awarded Morehead Scholarship - Smoky Mountain High School senior Cara Wittekind got some very good news this past week: She is a 2005 recipient of the Morehead Scholarship. “(The selection committee) just said, ‘You got it,’” Wittekind said. “It was kind of mind-blowing.” In December she received word that she was one of the 240 semifinalists, then was told she was one of the 60 finalists. Notification of her award came last Friday (March 11).


New commissioners’ chairman is expected to be named next week - The Jackson County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting at noon Wednesday, March 23, to swear in their new chairman. The meeting will be in the commissioners’s boardroom at the Justice Center. The Democratic Executive Committee is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m.  Tuesday, March 22, in Courtroom 1, to nominate a new chairman.

Two local women die in wreck on Sunday - Two women on their way to services at Long Branch Baptist Church died Sunday as the result of an automobile accident on U.S. 74-441 just west of Dillsboro. The wreck occurred at 5:45 p.m. at the highway’s intersection with Haywood Road and Pete Taylor Road. Elizabeth Davis, 77, of Piney Mountain Estates, Whittier, died Sunday night after being airlifted to Mission Hospitals in Asheville, according to Trooper Brian Parker of the N.C. Highway Patrol....
