CORRECTION – In a classified ad last week for the Semi-annual Consignment Sale at the old Ashley Co., it listed the half-price sale as all day on Saturday, March 12. The half-price hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday only. Don’t miss the big sale of children’s toys and clothing from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 11, and from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday followed by the half-price sale.
MARY WILSON, a fixture at the Jackson County Public Library for the past nine years, has accepted a new job in North Wilkesboro. Her last day at the local library will be Friday, March 18, and everyone is invited to a drop-in reception from 1 to 5 p.m. at the library to say good-bye and bring a card to wish Mary luck.
CULLOWHEE VALLEY SCHOOL will hold a spaghetti dinner and bluegrass dance Friday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children age 9 and under with all proceeds going to the school’s playground fund.
LOCAL RESIDENT JUNIOR GALLOWAY is helping organize a benefit for Shirley Grisby, whose father used to preach in Transylvania County, to help pay for her cancer treatments. The hot dog supper and cakewalk will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Balsam Grove Community Center.
TONEMASTER MUFFLER OWNER Harry Peisel will celebrate the shop’s 20th anniversary on March 28. Harry says thanks to all his customers for helping to make the business a success and says he’s looking forward to another 20 years.
THE LOCAL KIWANIS CLUB will host “Families Eating Together Night” Friday, March 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. Children age 12 and under can eat for free. Kiwanis meets every Wednesday at noon at Ryan’s.

BALSAM MOUNTAIN INN will bring together a trio of award-winning songwriters for its popular “Songwriters in the Round” series Saturday, March 12. Featured will be Nashville lyricists Thom Shepherd, Steve Williams and Will Rambeaux, who have collectively written lyrics for such country luminaries as Faith Hill, George Strait, Tim McGraw, John Michael Montgomery, Kathy Mattea, Ronnie Milsap, David Ball, Patty Loveless and Lee Greenwood. The songwriters are friends and have collaborated on lyrics, which should make for an interesting evening. The evening includes a dinner buffet, and the music begins at 7:30 p.m. Cover charge is $7 per person, plus dinner charge (about $24-$27). Reservations are encouraged. MUSIC BY BALSAM composer Judy Ross will be premiered at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., on Tuesday March 15. The new song cycle “My Soul Cries Out” will be performed by soprano Liana Valente, who commissioned the work. Ross’ music is woven around themes of peace and human needs; the songs comprising the cycle are “Peace,” “Eyes,” “Wounds,” “Awe,” “Exultation” and the epilogue, “Fulfillment.” |
