Thomas Fisher
Thomas “Tommy” Guy Fisher, 79, of Fisher Creek Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 4, at East Sylva Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Dean and Charles Stevens officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Honorary pallbearers were members of his Sunday school class.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked for Industrial Maintenance Overflow Corporation in Fletcher for 39 years as a superintendent/estimator. He was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church where he was a choir member, deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a son of the late Guy and Jeanette Sheehan Fisher.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Betty Jamison Fisher; one son, the Rev. Rick Fisher of Lexington, S.C.; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Evelyn Parrish
Evelyn Parrish, 83, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Skyland Care Center.
Memorial services will be held in Charleston, S.C., at a later date.
A native of Vance, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Estelle Atkins.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Austin C. Parrish; two brothers; and four sisters.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna Becker of Sylva; two brothers, Mack and Bo Atkins, both of Charleston; three sisters, Carolyn Upchurch and Norren Meyers, both of Charleston, and Margarette Windom of Summerton, S.C.; and one grandchild.

Jenny Smith
Jenny Rana Jenkins Smith, 30, of Cullowhee, formerly of Bryson City, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Revs. Tom Harris and John Orr officiating. Burial was in Jenkins Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of Terry Jenkins of Cullowhee and Jacob Allen Bigmeat of Greensboro.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sons, Timothy Smith and Ozzy Daniel Collins, both of the home; one daughter, Kylie Collins of the home; and one brother, Bradley Jenkins of Cullowhee.
James Smith
James Lewis “Snuffy” Smith, 77, of Easley, S.C., died Monday, March 7, 2005, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
He was a native of Sylva, was a retired employee of Platt-Saco Lowell, and was a Baptist. He was a son of the late Lewis and Florence Baumgarner Smith.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Hoyle Smith, and one daughter, Shirley Smith Dills.
Surviving are his wife, Lou Neal Smith; two daughters, Barbara Turner Griffith of Easley and Donna Hiles Cranford of Matthews, Ga.; one sister, Margaret Frye of Charlotte; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
Fredrick Rhoads
Fredrick Lowell Rhoads Jr., 69, of Balsam, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, at the Brian Center in Waynesville.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Dills Cemetery with the Rev. Hardin Nicholson officiating.
He was born Oct. 1, 1935, in Miami, Fla. and was a graduate of Western Carolina University. He formerly owned and operated Cagle Motors and Motor Discount in Sylva and was also the owner of Rhoads Excavating in Balsam. He was a son of the late Fredrick Lowell Sr. and Adelaide Carter Rhoads.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda P. Rhoads; one son, Lowell Rhoads of Balsam; three daughters, Debra Knight of Indianapolis, Ind., Beverly Rhoads of Farmville, Va., and Nancy Warren of Balsam; one brother, Robert Rhoads of Grandy; one sister, Mary Brookshire of Balsam; and three grandchildren.

Margaret Cabe
Margaret Hedrick Cabe, 80, of Cagle Branch Road, Sylva, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Burrell officiating. Burial was in Locust Field Baptist Church cemetery.
A native of Gaston County, she lived in Jackson County since 1988. She attended Calvary Baptist Church and was the daughter of the late John and Nonia Carr Hedrick.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alvin W. Cabe, who died in 2001; two brothers, Jim and Robert Hedrick; and one half-sister, Fannie Nixon.
Surviving are 10 nieces and two nephews.

Ellis Galloway
Ellis P. Galloway, 87, of Brevard, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, in Greenville, S.C.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the chapel of Moody Connolly Funeral Home with the Revs. Kevin Morgan and Tommy Owen officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens.
He retired from Olin in 1981 after 30 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a medical technician in World War II. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Rosman and Woodmen of the World. He was a son of the late Wed and Mary Harris Galloway.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Tony Lamar Galloway; four brothers, Chester, Dealous, Kenneth and Clyde Galloway; and three sisters, Ollie Hoxit, Zora Harris and Mandy Galloway.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Cornelia “Nelia” Hall Galloway; one son, Ellis Devoia Galloway of Penhook; one daughter, Patsy Galloway Mullinax of Lyman, S.C.; three sisters, Florence Hoxit of Tuckasegee, Bessie Arline of Jacksonville, Fla., and Betty Dean Turbyfill of Asheville; one brother, Earl Galloway of Castle Rock, Wash.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Theda Scruggs
Theda McCoy Scruggs, 60, of Monteith Branch Road, Sylva, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. Her ashes will be scattered in the mountains and on the beaches of North Carolina.
A native of Jackson County, she was a retired assistant manager with Wal-Mart, having worked in Florida and Sylva. She enjoyed fishing, visiting the beach and bowling. She was the daughter of the late Martha McCoy Keith.
Surviving are one son, Doug Strickland of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Kenneth McCoy of Goldsboro; and two grandsons.

Cline Hall
Cline E. Hall, 71, of Sylva’s Greens Creek community, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. David Souderes and Clifford Parker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites being conducted by the William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.
Pallbearers were his grandsons and Fred Griffin and Chad Hall.
Honorary pallbearers were the church’s deacons and Woodrow Frady, Doug Hall and Jim Mason.
A native of Buncombe County, he lived in Oregon for several years and resided in Jackson County for the past 28 years. He was a retired truck driver with Lenoir Transfer and a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He enjoyed country and bluegrass music and being outdoors. He was a son of the late Will and Pauline McDonald Hall.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Larry Dean Hall.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mary Lee Callahan Hall; one daughter, Pamela Kaye of Sylva; three sons, Del Hall of Sylva, Joe Cline Hall of Philomath, Ore., and Tim Hall of Live Oak, Fla.; two brothers, Jerry Hall of Brevard and Alvin Hall of Sylva; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Evelyn Spencer
Evelyn Herron Spencer, 76, of Bryson City, formerly of Kings Mountain, died March 6, 2005, at her home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Midview Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Bob Hope and Dennis Bean officiating. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain.
She was born in Swain County, and was a former owner/operator of Clark’s Restaurant in Sylva. She was a daughter of the late Fred Verlin Herron and Annie Mae Nations Herron.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Harley Herron.
Surviving are her husband, Claude Reed Spencer; four daughters, Sherry King of Easley, S.C., Deborah Jones and Freddie Frizzell, both of Sylva, and Kelly Spencer of Bryson City; three brothers, Luther Herron of Baltimore, Md., Charlie Herron of Kings Mountain, and Curtis Herron of Grover; four sisters, Eloise Stewart and Annette Costner, both of Kings Mountain, and JoAnn Ellis and Mary Lee Camp, both of Klamath Falls, Ore; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Thomas Moss
Thomas Junior Moss, 79, of Brevard, formerly of Glenville, died Monday, March 7, 2005.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, March 10) at Hamburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial will follow in Hamburg Cemetery with graveside honors being conducted by the U.S. Air Force.
Pallbearers will be deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
A native of Jackson County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He was a retired law officer with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, a member of the North Carolina Retired Peace Officer Association, a member of the Retired Sergeant’s Association, a member of Masonic Lodge 551 in Glenville, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4309 in Brevard, past commander of Jimmy Dillard Post 10689 in Glenville, a member of Moose Lodge 1769 in Brevard and a member of the American Legion in Brevard. He was the son of the late Thomas Franklin Moss and Belzie Keener Moss.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Irene Moss; and one sister, Loretta Robinson.
Surviving are one son, Charles Franklin Moss of Glenville; one daughter, Karen Grogan of Brevard; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mattie Hooper
Mattie C. Hooper, 84, of Sylva, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Powell officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She was a native of Rabun County, Ga., was retired from Skyland Textile and worked with Meals on Wheels until she was 80 years old. She was a daughter of the late Joe and Etta Thompson Conner.
She was preceded in death by three husbands, Spugeon Nicholson, Annual Wheeler and Glen Hooper; one daughter, Mary Peavy; six brothers, William, Lloyd, Vestel, Joney, Mitchell and Kenneth Conner; and two sisters, Virginia Badger and Lois Ann Matthews.
Surviving are three sons, Harold Nicholson and Alvin Nicholson of Gastonia and Tommy Wheeler of Sylva; three daughters, Catherine Estes of Royal Oaks, Mich., Linda Cook of Sylva and Lisa Wilson of Columbus; six brothers, James Conner of Franklin, Bobby and Danny Conner of Sylva, Donald of Tuckasegee, Johnny of Weaverville and David Conner of Rabun Gap, Ga.; two sisters, Wanda Powell of Tuckasegee and Nancy Conner; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
