Late goal lifts Brevard to soccer win over SM

A goal by Brevard’s Annelise Davis with less than four minutes to play Friday lifted the Lady Devils to a 2-1 win over Smoky Mountain in the season-opening soccer game at Brevard.

“It was a shot that looked as if it was going over the goal, but it stayed in,” Coach Lyman Whisman said of the goal that came at the 76:25 mark.

Despite the loss, he found some positives in his team’s play.

“I thought the girls came out and did a lot of good things,” he said. “They were going to the ball and were winning 50-50s.”

The Lady Mustangs struck first as Carrilea Potter scored at the 23:04 mark.

“There was a scramble in front of the box,” Whisman said. “The ball was played to her, and she made a great finish.”

He added that Potter played well the entire game.

“I was very impressed with her,” the coach said. “They double-teamed her in the second half.”

Brevard drew even on Allison Hawkins’ goal off of Grace Koerber’s assist at the 32:26 mark.

“It’s unfortunate that little mistakes can cost you a game,” Whisman said. “On that first goal, we didn’t put pressure on the shooter.”

Both teams got off 12 shots. SM’s Amy Haggard had five saves, and Victoria Mosser made eight for the Lady Devils.

“Amy had some outstanding saves through the night,” the coach said.

The game was postponed from Monday due to inclement weather. A game at West Henderson on March 2 was called off and has not been reset.
