Friday morning fire sends one to hospital

By Carey Phillips

A fire in the Savannah area early Friday morning extensively damaged a house and sent its lone occupant to Harris Regional Hospital for treatment.

Connetta Montalto was treated and released after sustaining burns on her hands and one foot, according to Floyd Green, assistant chief of the Savannah Fire Department.

Savannah firefighters responded to the 2:20 a.m. call to the house just off U.S. 23-441 near Bettys Creek. A passing motorist saw the blaze from the highway and called authorities.

“The house was pretty much fully involved with fire when the motorist called it in,” Green said. “It had already burned through the roof.”

Montalto was awakened by a pet, either her dog or cat, and escaped the house. The dog also escaped, but the cat died in the blaze, according to Green.

The fire started under a deck and resulted in extensive damage to the living room and kitchen, Green said. Embers from an outdoor fire place that had been used the day before apparently blew under the deck and sparked the blaze, he said.

Providing mutual aid were fire departments from Sylva and Cullowhee as well as Mountain Valley in Macon County.
