Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Geneva Walkingstick

Geneva Thompson Walkingstick, 71, of Cherokee’s Big Y community, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Waterfalls Baptist Church with the Rev. Bo Parris officiating. Burial was in Thompson Family Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a retired waitress at the Boundary Tree. She was a daughter of the late Jackson and Alice Wolfe Thompson.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, James R. Walkingstick, and one sister, Luzene Thompson.

Surviving are three sons, James E., Jack and Chris Walkingstick, all of Cherokee; two daughters, Crystal Walkingstick of Cherokee and Emily Walkingstick Bird of Robbinsville; two sisters, Nellie Driver of Cherokee and Nancy Brown of Robbinsville; two brothers, Joe and Leroy Thompson, both of Cherokee; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Amos Lambert

Amos Lambert, 87, of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Tow String Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Doug Matthews, Ray Lambert and Dan Lambert officiating. Burial was in Tow String Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

A native of Swain County, he had lived in Jackson County for the past 25 years. He was a retired electrician and was first officer for the Cherokee Police Department. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a son of the late Thomas Raper and Nancy Yonce Lambert.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lalah Bales Lambert, who died in November 2004; one daughter, Sharlotte Lambert; two brothers, Seymore Lambert and Willard Lambert; two sisters, Florence Bradley and Pauline Harris; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are three daughters, Beulah Young, Phyllis Tomlinson and Shirley Reagen, all of Cherokee; three sons, William “Willie” Lambert, Charles Lambert and Grady Lambert, all of Cherokee; one sister, Mary Lambert Keener of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Jack Norton

Jack Norton, 81, of Sylva, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Skyland Care Center following a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, March 3) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Jackson County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He was self-employed, a member of American Legion Post 104 of Sylva and a member of the Izaak Walton League of America. He was a former resident of Falls Church, Va., where he was a member of Columbia Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Oscar Lee and Bonnie Lee Stephens Norton.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Bearden Norton; one son, Gary Norton of Walkersville, Md.; one daughter, Dona Euler of Rio Linda, Calif.; one sister, Anna Deyermond of Prince Fredrick, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Odell Wood

Odell Daniel “Ode” Wood, 76, of Corvallis, Ore., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005.

Born in Gastonia, he was orphaned at 6 years old. He and his brother Horace “Hod” Wood went to Hamilton, Wash., to live with their grandparents, Cole and Juda Mathis. He worked on dairy farms, graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor of arts in accounting and worked as the internal auditor for the Oregon State University System. He later became business manager for the University of Oregon athletic department and in 1978 he joined the staff of the Oregon State University athletic department, where he remained until his retirement. He enjoyed golf, cooking and building houses.

Surviving are his wife, Lois; one son, Randy Wood of Springfield, Ore.; one daughter, Sandra Cox of Lake Oswego. Ore.; one brother, Hod Wood of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

John Lossiah

John Henry Lossiah, 65, of Cherokee’s Piney Grove community, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel with the Ray Kinsland and the Rev. Arthur Locust officiating. Burial was in Lossiah Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

A native of Swain County, he was a craftsman at the Cherokee Indian Village and sang with the Reed Family Quartet. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing. He was a son of Lillian Lossiah of Cherokee and the late Jess Lossiah.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles Lossiah.

Surviving in addition to his mother are four sons, Jerry Lee Lossiah, Ricky Lossiah and Billy Joe Lossiah, all of Cherokee, and Eddie Lossiah of New Hope, Ala.; one sister, Ann Cooper of Cherokee; three brothers, James Lossiah, Ernie Lossiah and Leander Lossiah, all of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Helen Hall

Helen R. Cagle Hall, 81, of Sylva, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Lovedale Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Farmer and Cecil Frady officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Robert D. Kelley III, Albert Reagan, Lonnie Jamison, Steve Allen, Hugh Davis, Guy Dillard, Jerry Melton, David Frizzell and Brian Bishop.

Honorary pallbearers were Doug Cody, J.C. Cagle, Steve Cody and Mark Cagle.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a former employee of Belk of Sylva, Skyland Textile and Buster Brown and was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church and the Celia Parker Circle. She was a daughter of the late Carrie and Carl Cagle Sr.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Agnes Cody, and one brother, Carl Cagle Jr.

Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Lyle Hall; one daughter, Linda Stiles of Sylva; one son, Carroll Hall of Sylva; one brother, Edward Bryson Cagle of Anderson, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Lisa Owens

Lisa Renee Swafford Owens, 40, of Seneca, S.C., died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Rock Bridge Cemetery in Jackson County’s Canada community.

She was born in Transylvania County on Oct. 22, 1964. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God. She was a daughter of Hilda Simpson of Pickens, S.C., and the late Ernest David Swafford.

Surviving are two sons, Christopher and Bradley Owens, both of Westminster, S.C.; her stepfather, Jack Simpson of Pickens; her maternal grandmother, Gaynell Mathis of Brevard; one brother, Ben Swafford of Seneca; and one sister, Tammy Wirtz of Toccoa, Ga.

Marian Petterson

Marian Jeannette Mahanay Petterson, 75, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, March 1, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

She was born April 20, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was raised in Webster Groves, Mo. She worked as an X-ray technician at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and was a former resident of Ft. Myers, Fla. She co-owned and operated My Grandma’s Pancake Barn and local KFC restaurants with her late husband, William “Bill” Petterson, who died in 1990. She was a daughter of the late Stuart Cornelius and Violet Marguerite Cunliff Mahanay.

Surviving are four daughters, Lt. Col. Peggy Jones of San Antonio, Texas, Nancy Nixon of Wilkesboro, Col. Kathy Kasun of Virginia Beach, Va., and Patty Boyd of Waynesville; one sister, June Shoulberg of Webster Groves, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Margaret Gregory

Margaret Ann West Gregory, 69, of Floral Drive, Sylva, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, March 3) at East Sylva Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Dean and Charles Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Keener Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be deacons of East Sylva Baptist Church.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was retired from Buster Brown after 35 years of service. She was a daughter of the late William E. and Mae Crisp West.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Louise Campbell, Dorothy West and Helen West; and one brother, J.D. West.

Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Willard Edgar “Gene” Gregory; one daughter, Jean Ann Cunningham of Franklin; one sister, Betty Gillespie of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Burlin Crawford

Burlin Edwin Crawford, 81, of Clyde, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at his residence.

No services are planned at this time.

He was born May 5, 1923, in Jackson County to the late Phillip J. and Elizabeth Parris Crawford.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Allen, Glenn, and Jesse W. "Mack" Crawford.

Surviving are one daughter, Pat Crawford-Beck of Waynesville; one son, James E. Crawford of Mobile, Ala.; one sister, Blanche Morris of Murphy; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Carlie Anderson

Carlie Jai Anderson, infant daughter of Brianne Jai Winkler and Robert Carlon Anderson of Whittier, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Knowles officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow, Fla., at a later date.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Rufus C. Anderson, and paternal great-grandfather, W.D. Clayton.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her paternal grandmother, Glenda Nations of Whittier; paternal great-grandmother, Grace Clayton of Bartow; maternal grandparents, Dan and Sandra Weekley of High Shoals; maternal great-grandparents, Gerald and Edna Braswell of High Shoals; three brothers, Jacob Carlon Anderson, Robinson Trenton Anderson and Zachary Abbitt, all of the home; and one sister, Martha M. Abbitt of the home.

Anne Castano

Anne Lee Costner Castano, 71, of Sylva’s Greens Creek community, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, in Loganville, Ga., after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Greens Creek Cemetery.

She was born in Charlotte, raised in Miami, and had lived in Jackson County for the last 18 years. She was a USO dancer, Sunday school teacher and a Girl Scout leader. She was a daughter of the late Ambrose and Ethel LaFreeda Petree Costner.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Theodore John Castano.

Surviving are three daughters, Terri Coppala of Cleveland, Vicki Yawn of Charlotte and Kristi Nolen of Loganville, Ga.; one sister, Sallie Davis; two brothers, William and Robert Costner; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
