“We tried to overcome a cold-shooting second quarter,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “We started strong in the second half but weren’t able to maintain the momentum.”
SM trailed most of the game until a 13-2 run, including six by DeGraffenreid, resulted in a 32-31 edge after a 17-foot baseline jumper by Mathis with 4:37 to play in the third quarter.
Moments later, DeGraffenreid went to the bench with three fouls and sat out the remainder of the period. In her absence, the Lady Rams turned to a pressing defense and went on an 18-3 run, including seven by Trexler, for a 49-35 advantage.
A fast break layup by Danielle Robinson made it 51-35 to start the final stanza, and the Lady Mustangs came no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Ameka Buchanan scored four quick points as SM took a 6-2 edge with 5:19 to go in the first quarter.
Trexler and Hankins both scored four in an 8-0 run for a 10-6 Roberson lead at the 3:11 mark. The Lady Rams were up 16-15 at the quarter break following Stephanie Chapman’s 12-footer with 23 seconds on the clock.
The Lady Mustangs were held to four points in the second period.
Roberson scored the half’s final eight points, including five by Morgan Ray, for a 28-19 lead at intermission.
DeGraffenreid hit seven field goals, including two three-pointers, and eight foul shots. Mathis’ points came on four field goals and three free throws.
Kristine Webb finished with nine points, Buchanan netted four and Amy Haggard had two.
DeGraffenreid came up with seven steals and handed out four assists. Webb pulled down nine rebounds.
The Lady Mustang JVs defeated Roberson 27-19 as Brittany Gilbert scored 14 points.
