Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Lorraine Oberle

Lorraine Ladell Oberle, 52, of Chipmunk Trail, Glenville, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Cashiers Baptist Church with the Rev. Art Fowler officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.

She was born in England and lived in Jackson County for the past nine years. She was the daughter of Iris Sparrow Ladell of Clearwater, Fla., and the late James Ladell.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Oberle, who died in November 2004.

Surviving in addition to her mother are one daughter, Bretney Oberle of the home; one son, Michael Gilmartin of Largo, Fla.; one stepson, Frank Steven Oberle Jr. of Smithfield, Va.; and one brother, Brian Ladell of Safety Harbor, Fla.

Clyde Price

Clyde Foster Price, 79, of Monroe, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Lakeview Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was born in Union County on May 7, 1925. He retired from Duff-Norton Co. and was a son of the late Blair and Lenora Godfrey Price.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Lindsay Price.

Surviving are one son, Dennis Price of Sylva; two daughters, Barbara Pigg of Monroe and Shirley Rankin of Statesville; one brother, Robert Price of West Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Lib Sherman of Eatonton, Ga., Mabel Starnes of Monroe, and Grace Carter of Waxhaw; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Jackson County Transit, Jackson County Nutrition Program or Gideons International.

Grace Beck

Grace Reese Beck, 79, of Odyssey Lane, Sylva, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

She was a native of Cherokee County and lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a librarian at the Jackson County Public Library for more than 30 years, a member and president of the Sylva Woman’s Club, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. She served as president of the United Methodist Women. She volunteered with the VA Hospital in Asheville, served on the board of trustees at Sylva’s First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Social Squares of Sylva. She was a daughter of the late B.B. and Lillian Conner Reese.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, C. Jack Beck; three brothers; and three sisters.

Surviving are one son, Charles J. Beck Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; one daughter, Lynda Beck Cowan of Sylva; one brother, Clifford Reese; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Marcos Gonzalez

Marcos Lopez Gonzalez, 24, of Mali Road, Cherokee, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.
The body was returned to Guatemala for services and burial.

He was born in Guatemala and lived in Jackson County for the past 12 years.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Surviving are his mother, Juanita Gonzalez; one daughter, Marinda Amyra Lopez of Cherokee; one stepson, Taylor Wachacha of Cherokee; three sisters, Fedelina Lopez Gonzalez, Audelina Lopez Gonzalez and Ermemda Lopez Gonzalez; and four brothers, Eredina Lopez Gonzalez, Cesar Lopez Gonzalez, Anibal Lopez Gonzalez and Hubert Lopez Gonzalez.


Wiley Ammons

Wiley Don Ammons, 94, of Mountain Trace Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Adams officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

He was born Nov. 17, 1910, in Macon County and lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, a self employed timberman and son of the late John and Martha Heaton Ammons.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Otelia Ashe Ammons, who died in 1973; one son, Clifford Ammons; three brothers; three sisters; two grandsons; and one step-grandson.

Surviving are his wife, Eva Prince Ammons; one son, Carnell Ammons of Tuckasegee; three daughters, Kathleen Ensley and Mary Bryson, both of Sylva, and Mary Jo Harris of Tuckasegee; two stepsons, Joel and Wayne Prince; one stepdaughter, Glenda Johnson of Washington; one sister, Mattie Broome of Maryland; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Hayes Nicholson

Hayes Nicholson, 67, of Tuckasegee, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Balsam Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Wyatt officiating. The family will receive friends today (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Balsam Grove Cemetery.

He was a native of Jackson County and lived most of his life here. He was a retired equipment operator with L.C. McMahan, a sportsman and a musician. He was a son of the late Garland and Winnie Watson Nicholson.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Danny Nicholson, and two brothers, Fred and John Nicholson.

Surviving are one daughter, Tammy Smathers of Whittier; two sons, Eric Nicholson of Tuckasegee and Darren Nicholson of Canton; two sisters, Elizabeth Watson of Canton and Leona Mathis of Sylva; one brother, George Nicholson of Sylva; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

R.B. Coward

The Rev. R.B. Coward, 70, of Cullowhee’s Johns Creek community, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Upper Coward Cemetery with the Revs. Don Riddle, Carl Adams and Eddie Stillwell officiating.

Pallbearers were Robbie Nicholson, Logan Luker, Quincy Clayton, Alan Bishop, Danny Brown and Virgil Brown.

He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He was a member of Wolf Creek Baptist Church, a farmer, an ordained Baptist minister and an avid coon hunter. He was a son of the late James Thomas and Willie Belle Moore Coward.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Jacquelyn Steele Coward; three daughters, Ruth Ann Putnam and Glenna Rowe, both of Cullowhee, and Peggy Parker of Tuckasegee; three sons, Thomas Verlon Coward of Williamsburg, Va., Calvin E. Coward of Cullowhee and Marvin L. Coward of Cherokee; two sisters, Margaret Coggins of Darrington, Wash., and Joann Roberts of Marysville, Wash.; two brothers, Carl Coward of Granite Falls, Wash., and Russell Coward of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
