Lady Mustangs to start 3-A sectionals at home
Smoky Mountain’s women’s basketball team is expected to open the state 3-A sectionals at home Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs, the third seed from the Mountain Athletic Conference, will likely meet St. Stephens, the third seed from the Southwestern Foothills Conference. The tentative starting time is 7 p.m.
The only way that matchup will change is if there is an upset and a team seeded third or lower wins either the MAC or SFC tournament.
The winner will go to Gastonia on Thursday, Feb. 24, to face Hunter Huss, the Big South Conference champion, in the sectional semifinals.
Sectional finals will be Saturday, Feb. 26. If SM gets that far it would be on the road, probably at Foard, Hickory or Roberson.
Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs will face Roberson tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. in the MAC tourney semifinals at North Buncombe. The winner will meet regular season champion Asheville at 6:30 p.m. Friday, also at North Buncombe.
SM advanced to the semis with a 64-47 win over Erwin on Tuesday at North. Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 28 points, and Leslie Mathis had 16. Details of that game will be in next week’s Herald.
The Mustang men ended their season 8-18 Monday with a 70-39 loss to top-seeded Erwin in the first round of the tourney at North. John Salzano and Tyson Crawford both scored 10 points. Details of that game will also be in next week’s Herald.
