Delinquency prevention funding is available

The Jackson County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council has announced the availability of $108,594 for services to youth most at risk of court involvement. These funds require a local cash or in-kind match of 20 percent and will be granted for the 2005-06 state fiscal year.

Local council members have identified the following risk factors proposed programs should address:

– Community, especially drug and alcohol use and abuse.

– Individual, including mental health and biological conditions and early initiation of conduct problems.

– Family, especially parent and family management problems.

– Peer group, including rejection, isolation and modeling of negative behaviors.

Based on the local JCPC planning process, the following are program types that are needed:

– Structured activities: mentoring, parent and or family skill building, interpersonal skill building, vocational development, tutoring/academic enhancement and experiential skill building.

– Restorative services: mediation and restitution/community service.

– Clinical services:  Psychological and substance abuse assessments, substance abuse treatment (residential and non residential), sex offender treatment, counseling, crisis counseling and home-based family services.

– Residential services: group home, temporary shelter, specialized foster care and temporary foster care.

Local public agencies, non-profit corporations and local housing corporations wishing to submit applications for programs to address any of the above will need to secure application forms and other necessary information. A mandatory training session will be required for new applicants. Information is available from the DJJDP Area Office by calling June Fowler at (828) 250-3809 or the local chief court counselor at 586 5756. Online applications can be found at www.juvjus.state.nc.us. Technical assistance is provided.

Deadline for receiving applications is March 9. Applications should be mailed to the local Department of Juvenile Justice, attention Dusty Snider, at 8 Colonial Square, Suite 100, Sylva, NC 28779.
