Catamount baseball to open season Saturday

Western Carolina’s baseball team will open its season at home this weekend against Wright State.

The teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

The Catamounts have been picked to finish sixth in the 11-team Southern Conference in polling by the league’s coaches and sports information directors.

Seniors Jared Greenwood and Chris Davis were named to the coaches’ preseason all-conference team.

Western will be looking to improve on last season’s 28-31 record.

The schedule is as follows:

Feb. 19 - Wright State (DH); 20 – Wright State; 25-27 – at Rice Invitational (Rice, New Mexico, Nebraska).

March 2 – at UNC-Asheville; 4-6 – at Coastal Carolina Tournament (Kent State, James Madison, Coastal); 8-9 – Georgia State; 11-13 – Appalachian State; 16 – at Gardner-Webb; 18-20 – at College of Charleston; 23 – UNC-A; 25-27 – Citadel; 29 – at Georgia Tech; 30-31 – Brown.

April 1 – at Davidson; 6 – UNC-A; 8-10 – East Tennessee; 12 – Clemson; 15-17 – at Furman; 19 – at Clemson; 22-24 – Georgia Southern; 27 – UNC-A at McCormick Field; 29-30 – at UNC-Greensboro.

May 1 – at UNC-G; 7-9 – Elon; 11 – at Georgia; 13-15 – Charleston Southern; 17 –Gardner-Webb; 20 – at Wofford; 21 – at Wofford (DH); 25-28 – Southern Conference Tournament at Charleston, S.C.
