Sylva's officials to meet twice monthly
By Carey King
Sylva residents can now mark their calendars for not one, but two, town meetings a month.
Town leaders voted last week (Feb. 3) to add a morning meeting to their regular schedule. That means they'll gather at Town Hall not only at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month, but also at 10 a.m. on third Thursdays.
"It will keep all of us better in tune," said Mayor Brenda Oliver, noting the need for elected leaders to have more time to communicate with town administration.
The new schedule will take effect in March.
In other business Feb. 3:
• Landis Street one-way: Board members voted to make the stretch of Landis Street in front of the downtown Sylva post office one-way. The designation will extend from Jackson Street to Main.
The change comes after a recommendation by Police Chief Jeff Jamison, who has been monitoring traffic in the area for the past month following a request from the Sylva postmaster.
Drivers will be notified of the change once signs are put up and the street is repainted with angled parking spots on both sides of the street, town Manager Richard McHargue said.
"It'll be a little inconvenient and you'll have to go up and back, but I think the increase in parking will be worthwhile," Jamison said.
• Safe highway: An official from the N.C. Department of Transportation has determined that the stretch of U.S. Business 23 in front of Mark Watson Park is safe, Jamison reported.
The chief had asked DOT to evaluate the road after two recent fatal accidents there.
While DOT found the road has "no defect," Jamison said he has directed his officers to step up efforts to stop speeding in the area.
