Dorothy Franks
Dorothy Barnes Franks, 59, of Sylva's Greens Creek community, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. David Souderes, Jeff Powell and Clifford Parker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eddie Frady, Eddie Bingham, Brandon Franks, Curtis Webb, Hayes Webb, Jeff Hoyle, Terry Robinson and Lee Hill. Honorary pallbearers were Woodrow Frady, Mark Barker, Jim Mason, Doug Hall, Ronnie Burch, Danny Hall and Gregg White.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a CNA at Skyland Care Center where she also worked in the kitchen. She was a daughter of Christine Franklin Barnes of Tuckasegee and the late Hampton Barnes.
In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lee Franks.
Surviving in addition to her mother are three daughters, Kim McCall, Gina Biddix and Kristie Frady, all of Sylva; two sisters, Patricia Powell of Tuckasegee and Kathy Webb of Sylva; and six grandchildren.

Kenneth George
Kenneth "Keno" George, 62, of Cherokee's Bigwitch community, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in a Buncombe County hospital.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Bigwitch Baptist Church, of which he was a member and choir leader, with the Revs. James Sneed and James "Bo" Parris officiating. Burial was in Twister Littlejohn Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Marie George.
He is survived by numerous cousins.

Alma Creasman
Alma Robinson Creasman, 86, of Waynesville, formerly of Balsam, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at the Brian Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Katherine K. Crane officiating. Burial was in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
A native of Haywood County, she was a machine operator who retired from Dayco. She was a member of Fincher Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Abraham Kuykendall Chapter of NSDAR and enjoyed stamp collecting, bird watching, and working puzzles. She was a daughter of the late Jerry Ratcliff and Bessie Rhinehart Robinson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Creasman, who died in 1998; one daughter, Sue Carolyn Summey; three sisters, Nancy Cockrell, Helen Wagoner and Ruth Smathers; and four brothers, Ralph, Ratcliff, Boone and Claude Robinson.
Surviving are one daughter, Cynthia Pace; one son, Ronald L. Creasman of Tuckasegee; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Melissa Bradley
Melissa Standingdeer Bradley, 37, formerly of Cherokee, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at her residence in Danville, Va.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Standingdeer Family Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Park officiating.
A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of John C. Standingdeer Sr. and the late Mary French Standingdeer.
In addition to her father she is survived by her husband, Donald J. Bradley; one son, John Albert Bradley of the home; one daughter, Meredith Siena Bradley of the home; two brothers, John Standingdeer Jr. and Shan French Standingdeer, both of Cherokee; and two sisters, Vicki and Sheila Standingdeer, both of Cherokee.

Donald Hodgin
Donald D. Hodgin, 63, of Franklin, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at Gillespie Chapel Cemetery.
A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late William Hodgin and Hazel Watts Conley. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Hodgin. He was a construction worker and a member of Gillespie Chapel Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna Stephens of Cullowhee; one son, Eddie Hodgin of Sylva; two brothers, Roger Hodgin of Franklin and Dennis Hodgin of Turtle Town, Tenn.; three sisters, Doris Ledbetter and Mary Henry of Franklin, and Judy Johnson of Sylva; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Tina Henry
Tina Powell Henry, 46, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Memorial services were held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Powell officiating.
Born in Haywood County, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was office manager for Parker Paving and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She was the daughter of Betty Smith Powell of Sylva and the late Doyle Powell.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Benny Henry; one daughter, Jessica Maria Henry of Sylva; one brother, Richard Powell of Sylva; two step-daughters, Deidre Sue Martin of Cleveland, Tenn., and Monica Rae Parton of Sylva; one step-son, Dustin Scott Henry of Sylva; and seven step-grandchildren.

Hubert Eurich
Hubert Eurich, 78, of Wellington, Fla., formerly of Sylva, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at his residence.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at the First Baptist Church of Wellington. He was born July 19, 1926, in Edenville, N.Y. He was a dairy farmer and a successful real estate investor.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lilia Eurich; two sons, Donald Eurich and Peter Eurich; one daughter, Pamela Alba; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mavis Smith
Mavis Lea O'Bryan Smith, 63, of Sylva, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at Bower Funeral Chapel in Pulaski, Va., with the Rev. J.P. Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, Va.
She was born June 21, 1941, in Glen Fork, W.Va. She was a daughter of Audie Atkins O'Bryan of Dublin and the late Walter O'Bryan.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, John Douglas Smith; one daughter, Linda Lea Woodward of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sons, John Douglas Smith II and Richard Walter Smith, both of Sylva, and Jerry Ryan Smith of Columbus, Ga.; one brother, Walter O'Bryan Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; three sisters, Wanda M. Kirk of Glade Hill, Va., Lana Joyce Lusk of Davin, W.Va., and Sharon J. Lunsford of Upton, Ky.; and five grandchildren.
Nola Waldroup
Nola Abigail Davidson Waldroup, 85, of Robbinsville, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Britthaven of Graham after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at Robbinsville First Baptist Church with the Revs. Noah Crowe, Fred Lunsford and Jack Long officiating. Burial was in Carver Cemetery.
She was born Feb. 2, 1919, in Forbus, Tenn., but lived in Graham County for 58 years. She was a member of Robbinsville First Baptist Church and served in its nursery for more than 50 years. She worked at Snowbird Supply and later for Burlington Furniture. She enjoyed reading and gardening. She was a daughter of the late James Marshall Davidson and Mary P. Story Davidson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Otis F. Waldroup, who died in May 1982; one son, Terry Otis Waldroup; six brothers, Astor, Gifford, Coy, Walden, Ofel and Enett Davidson; and four sisters, Hessie Manis, Othniel Crouch and Dorothy and Topha Davidson.
Surviving are one daughter, Gail Ensley of Sylva; and one son, John Perry Waldroup of Robbinsville.
Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation. Also, donations of time to Britthaven of Graham may be made.

Linda McElroy
Linda Smith McElroy, 58, of Waynesville, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Jerry Nelson and Timothy Rall officiating. Burial was in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Waynesville.
Pallbearers were Joe McElroy, David Burgess, Danny Kirkpatrick, Jimmy Teague, Howard Demory and Chuck Hough.
A native of Arlington, Va., she had lived in Haywood County for the past seven years. She was a position coordinator with WestCare Health Systems and had been a physicians recruiter. She was involved in REACH of Jackson County, the Family Resource Center, Community Table and Tokens, a thrift store in Waynesville. After being diagnosed with breast cancer she began work on a support group for those with the disease and their families. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening and interior decorating. She was the daughter of Wayne Smith of Inglis, Fla., and the late Betty Jean Hough Demory.
Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Johnny W. McElroy; four daughters, Beverly James of Clyde, Dawn Brown of Fredricksburg, Va., Robin Slater of Bentonville, Ark., and Misty Brown of Canton; one son, Allen Wayne Flather of Wilmington; step-mother, Pansy Smith of Inglis; step-father, Calvin Demory of Tappahannock, Va.; two brothers, Howard Demory of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Michael Demory of Fredricksburg; and seven grandchildren.

Jane Gullett
Jane Carpenter Gullett, 55, of Clayton, Ga., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005.
A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at St. Frances Catholic Church of Franklin, of which she was a member, with Father Matthew Kauth officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
A native of Kokomo, Ind., she worked at Rabun County Hospital for many year. She was a daughter of former state Sen. Robert C. Carpenter of Franklin, and the late Ruth Cope Carpenter.
In addition to her mother, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Poppe and Debbie Marshall.
Surviving, in addition to her father, are three sons, Adam Gullett, Scot Gullett and Michael Gullett; step-mother, Helen Carpenter; one sister, Tina Carpenter; and four brothers, Robert D. Carpenter, Dale Carpenter, Tom Carpenter and Eddie Carpenter.

Dora Nix
Dora Lee Stewart Nix, 84, of Cashiers, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Cashiers Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Norris and Walter Wilson officiating. Burial was in Stewart Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
Born in Oconee County, S.C., she was a homemaker and a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Jack and Arleca Brown Stewart.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Dale Nix; five sisters; three brothers; and one grandson.
Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Henry Nix; three daughters, Shirley Chastain of Knoxville, Tenn., Glenda Moss of Cashiers and Thyra Chapman of Lake Toxaway; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Nannie Hampton
Nannie Belle Hampton, 74, of Pisgah Forest, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in a Brevard retirement center.

She was a native of Jackson County and a daughter of the late Harley A. and Etta Simods Buckanan.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harley Hampton in 1998, and two grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Doug Hampton of Hendersonville and Ron Hampton of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Cora Lee Clampitt of Bryson City; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Charles Murray
Charles Smith Murray Jr., 68, of Cherokee's Yellowhill community, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at his residence.

A native of New Jersey and long-time resident of Florida, he lived in Swain County for the past year. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had retired as an accountant, having worked in the insurance industry for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie Murray; one son, Charles Smith Murray III of New York; one daughter, Terri Rohmain of New York; three step-children, Robin West of Johnson City, Tenn., Vincent Haigh of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Tracey Burton of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one brother, Gene Murray of Gloucester, Mass.; one sister, Carol Richardson of Port Orange, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

Robert Lowe
Robert Lewis Lowe Jr., 50, of Waynesville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Balsam Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Johnny Swanger officiating. Military honors were conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47.
A native of Haywood County, he spent his childhood in Jackson County. He was a 1974 graduate of Lawton (Okla.) High School and was employed by Phillips as a window assembler. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was an OS2 operations specialist aboard the USS Charles F. Adams. He enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, woodworking and working with his hands.
Surviving are his parents, Robert "R.L." and Gin Lowe of Crescent City, Fla.; his wife of 13 years, Diane Putnam Lowe; one daughter, Katie Lynn Lowe of Canton; one son, Zachary Colin Putnam of Clyde; and one granddaughter.
