DeGraffenreid, Webb power Lady Mustangs
Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 26 points and Kristine Webb had 23 leading Smoky Mountain to a 65-46 victory at Rabun County (Ga.) on Feb. 1
The Lady Mustangs built a 21-point lead then held off a Rabun rally before pulling away down the stretch.
Gracie Deal paced the Lady Wildcats with 10 points.
"We played good defense and controlled the boards," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "When they made their run, we showed composure and executed well."
Webb was almost automatic when she got the ball inside as she made 10 of 12 shots from the floor to go with three free throws. She pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked eight shots.
"Kristine was dominant inside," Simmons said. "Once we got the ball to her, she was almost unstoppable."
DeGraffenreid hit eight field goals, including a three-pointer, and nine foul shots. She handed out four assists and came up with four steals.
"Cetera had an outstanding game," the coach said. "She obviously scored, but she also did a good job running the offense and played very good defense."
DeGraffenreid and Webb both scored 10 to combine for all of their teams' points in the first period. Webb had eight in a 10-0 run for a 16-6 lead with 3:06 on the clock. SM led 20-10 at the quarter break.
The Lady Mustangs built the lead to 34-15 when DeGraffenreid went coast-to-coast with 2:56 to play in the half. The margin was 36-19 at intermission.
The game's biggest lead was 48-27 on Webb's fast break layup with 2:54 to go in the third stanza.
Rabun scored nine straight, the first five by Whitney Jowers, and cut the gap to 48-36 on Deal's two foul shots with 27.9 seconds to play in the quarter.
Laury Brown's steal and layup just before the end of the period helped stem the tide and put the Lady Mustangs in front 51-36.
The Lady Wildcats trailed 58-46 after Heather Beck's basket with 4:25 to play, but they failed to score the rest of the game.
Leslie Mathis finished with six points, Ashley Coggins netted five, Brown and Ameka Buchanan both had two and Kelli Woodard hit a free throw.
The Lady Mustang JVs won 44-33. Cayla Cucumber scored 21 points, and Brittany Gilbert had 14.
SM led at quarter breaks by scores 9-6, 21-19 and 40-29.
"They played a great team ballgame," Coach Kim Hardy said.
