Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Ann Gehring

Ann Elizabeth Ripley Gehring, 54, of Cottontail Run, Sylva, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at First United Methodist Church in Sylva with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating.

A native of Huntington, W. Va., she was a homemaker and a music teacher who loved to sing. She was a registered nurse, a member of the Parents Association of Asheville School, president of the Jackson County Recreation Board, volunteered for the PTA at Fairview Elementary School, president of the WCU Chorus, a member of Kudzu Players and a member of the Jackson County Advisory Board of AIG. She was the daughter of the late Frances Perry Ripley and Daniel C. Ripley of Huntington, who survives.

Surviving, in addition to her father, are her husband, Dr. Paul S. Gehring; two daughters, Molly and Sarah of the home; two brothers, John Ripley of Austin, Texas and Daniel "Andrew" Ripley, of Huntington.

Eva Gates

Eva Gates, 82, of Whittier's Wilmot community, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, in a local health care facility.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Dicks Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Lanny Nations officiating. Burial was in Dicks Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her nephews, William Rayfield, Travis Painter, Arnold Brooks, Wayne Brooks, Chris Brooks and Emery Brooks.

A native of Jackson County, she was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting and baby-sitting. She taught children's class for many years at Hyatt's Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a member. She was a daughter of the late Roy and Maggie Jones Green.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Chester Raby; three brothers, David J. Green, Earl S. Green and Gentry J. Green; and one sister, Ruby Rayfield.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Gates of the home; three step-daughters, Joanne Jenkins of Bryson City, Betty Hooper of New Port Richie, Fla. and Hazel Rex of Greensboro; six sisters, Evelyn Beam of Everett, Wash., Beulah Littrell of Arlington, Wash., Kathleen Bunter of Wapato, Wash., Pauline Jones of Darrington, Wash., Jheri Wood of Morganton and Eula Brooks of Dillsboro; three brothers, Felix, Cornelius and Bufford Green, all of Darrington; and four grandchildren.

Stephen Long

Stephen Edwin Long, 57, of Whittier, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at First Baptist Church of Franklin with Dr. Randy Gardner and the Revs. Harold Ball and Harold Strader officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Winston-Salem and was manager of Peoples Department Store for many years. He owned and operated Stephen's Emporium in Waynesville and wrote numerous articles and columns for the Franklin Press. He wrote devotions for Smythe and Helwys Publishers and was a producer and actor with the Overlook Theatre. He was an Air Force veteran, a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville and an avid golfer. He was the son of Cleo Caudle Long of Winston-Salem and the late George Long.

Surviving in addition to his mother are one son, Jason Stephen Long of Greenville, S.C.; one daughter Lori Echevarria-Long of Franklin; and one sister, Susan McClellan of Winston-Salem.

Edith Woodard

Edith C. Woodard, 84, of Whittier's Conley's Creek community, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in Swain County Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Revs. Ned Pressley, Arvil Nations and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Mark Jones, Glen Jones, Steve McClure, Steven McClure, Brandon Hooper and Frelin Woodard.

A native of Swain County, she was a member of Whittier Church of God. She was a daughter of the late Lee and Rosie Woods Childers.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Geraldine Hooper; and one brother, Clyde Childers.
Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Vannie Woodard; two daughters, Mary Alice Woodard of the home and Norma McClure of Sylva; two sisters, Oma Parris of Bryson City and Ruth Wilkey of Sylva; two brothers, Troy Childers of Whittier and Samuel Childers of Burlington, Ky.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.


Edith Crowe

Edith Louise Crowe, 56, of Cherokee's Soco community, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Old Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor Denny Crowe and the Rev. Danny Little officiating. Burial was in Bradley Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She retired from the finance office at Cherokee Indian Hospital and was a member of Old Antioch Baptist Church, where she was the former director of the youth choir. She was a daughter of the late William Henry and Betty Bradley Crowe.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Ute Goingback Crowe.

Surviving are her husband of 15 years, Donald Crowe; one daughter, Daisy Crowe of the home; three sons, Dodie, Donovan and Dallas Crowe, all of Cherokee; one brother, Bill Crowe Jr. of Tennessee; and 10 grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Herbert Vogel

Herbert William Vogel, 75, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, Jan. 26, for close family members and friends. Gary Menninger, a longtime friend, presided.

Born during the Great Depression, he was raised on his grandfather's farm in Olmsted Falls, Ohio. In 1951 he earned his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University in agricultural sciences. After college, he moved to Asheville and met Doris Williams, who was a student at Western Carolina University. They were married in 1955 and opened a nursery and landscaping business in Ohio. He returned to Western North Carolina and in 1980, he began working at WCU, from which he retired in 1991 as grounds superintendent. He enjoyed hiking, camping and tending the earth.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Sharon; and two grandsons.


Charles Phillips

Charles T. Phillips, 70, of Lake Wales, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Lake Wales Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales with the Rev. R.L. O'Quinn officiating. Burial will be in Lake Wales Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home.

He was born Oct. 4, 1934, in Opp, Ala. He moved to Lake Wales in 1940 and was a retired warehouse supervisor for Agrico Chemicals. He was a deacon at Central Avenue and Westside Baptist Church and a little league coach. He worked for Citrus World for 18 years as quality control supervisor. He enjoyed visiting his home in Balsam, fishing and gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Phillips; two sons, Charles T. "Teddy" Phillips of Balsam and Gregory L. Phillips of Lake Wales; one sister, Linda Cooper of Lake Wales; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.


Beulah Beiswenger

Beulah May Beiswenger, 83, of Tuckasegee, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church with Pastor Timothy Rall officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

A native of Lloyd County, Ky., she was a member of the Lions Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and the Knights of Columbus in Delaware. She was a daughter of the late Martin and Poly Conly Stephens.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis Novack; one brother, Curtis Stephens; and four sisters, Earlene Spindal, Virginia Thomas, Ann Smith and Junita Bromall.

Surviving are her husband, Arthur Beiswenger; one sister, Loretta Harbaugh of Wilmington, Del.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Lee Craft

Lee R. Craft, 80, of Ripple Run, Sylva, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at First United Methodist Church in Sylva with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating. The family wil receive friends at the church following the service.

A native of Orleans Parish, La., she was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist where she was a volunteer and a member of the women's group. She was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels for 30 years. She was a daughter of the late Max. J. and Nola McChesney Constantin.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, William B. Craft; and two sisters.

Surviving are one son, Richard Craft of Dallas, Texas; two daughers, Marie Fowlkes of Sylva and Helen Gottschalk of Dallas; one brother, Max Constantin of Baton Rouge, La.; one sister, Dot Martin of New Orleans, La.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Youth Group, P.O. Box 296, Sylva, NC 28779.
