Commissioners present keys

020305whitesidehouse
Hazel Whiteside, fourth from left, said she was shaking with excitment and nervousness as she was presented with the keys to her new house by Jackson County Commissioner Joe Cowan, fifth from left. Whiteside's house was part of a scattered-site housing project initiated by the county to help those whose housing was substandard. After an application process and a review, recipients' homes were either demolished and a new modular home was constructed, as with Whiteside's home, or the existing structure was renovated. Three new homes have been built and three homes have been renovated with funds from a $400,000 community development block grant the county received for the purpose, said Joan Stillwell, project coordinator. After she received the key, Whiteside insisted on hugging each county official. "I just love it, I love everything," said Whiteside, who has lived her entire life on the Monteith Gap site. "I'm so grateful to the people who have made this possible. I want to thank every one of them." With Whiteside are, from left, county Manager Ken Westmoreland, Commissioners Eddie Madden, Roberta Crawford, Cowan, Commissioners' Chairman Stacy Buchanan, Commissioner Brian McMahan and Stillwell. – Herald photo by Derek Hodges.
