Western women divide two conference games

Western Carolina's women's basketball team split a pair of Southern Conference home games last week.

The Lady Cats (8-10, 4-7) lost 77-75 to Elon in overtime on Jan. 17 and knocked off Georgia Southern 92-81 Saturday at the Ramsey Center.

Elon's Tierra Bumbrey scored 16 points. Sade Jordan and Jessica Williams both netted 11, and Nicole Allison had 10.

The Lady Cats were led by Jennifer Gardner with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Lori Tanner had 16 points.

Elon led 33-25 at halftime, but Western fought back for a 68-68 tie at the end of regulation.

The Lady Phoenix shot 46 percent from the floor and held WCU to 35.9 percent.

Western controlled the boards 45-41. Elon's Nikko King had nine rebounds.

The Lady Cats committed 23 turnovers, and Elon had 22.

Completing the WCU scoring were Chevon Keith with nine, Ki-Ki Glass, Teyawna Hardy and Jessika Johnson all with six, Shaketia Barnes with five and Ashley Pellom with four.

Western scored 52 points in the second half to rally from a 39-35 deficit at intermission and defeat GSU.

Gardner had another big game with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Tanner and Sigita Maleraite both added 13 points.

The Lady Eagles were led by Nicole Newton and Dana Benemon with 16 points apiece. Adrienne Early scored 14.

WCU shot 47.6 from the floor while GSU made 44.9 percent of its field goal tries.

Western had a 42-37 rebounding advantage. Newton topped the Lady Eagles with 11.

The Lady Cats had 17 turnovers, and GSU committed 13.

Rounding out the WCU scoring were Barnes and Pellom both with eight, Hardy and Johnson with seven apiece, Keith with six and Glass with two.
