Smoky Mountain's women rout Swain

Smoky Mountain jumped to a big early lead Saturday and coasted to a 73-40 rout of Swain, the state's 10th ranked 1-A team, in Bryson City.

Cetera DeGraffenreid poured in 34 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Swain's Sarah Jennings scored 10 points.

"You never know how you're going to perform when you've played the night before," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "We were hot from the start and played very well all night."

The Lady Mustangs (14-4) opened the game on a 13-2 run, including seven by DeGraffenreid. Leslie Mathis' free throw capped the spurt at the 3:11 mark.

SM led 17-6 at the quarter break.

The Lady Mustangs broke the game wide open by outscoring Swain 27-2 over an eight-minute stretch spanning the second and third periods.

DeGraffenreid had eight points in a 14-2 spurt to end the half for a 44-21 lead.

The Lady Mustangs ran off the second half's first 13 points, including six by DeGraffenreid, making it 57-21 with 4:22 to go in the third stanza.

A three-pointer by Sky Kanott resulted in the game's biggest margin, 66-26, entering the fourth quarter.

DeGraffenreid hit 12 field goals, including two three-pointers, and eight foul shots.

Mathis finished with nine points, Ameka Buchanan added six, Kristine Webb followed with five, Kelli Woodard, Amy Haggard and Brandi Anders all netted four, Kanott scored three and Rachel Stewman and Laury Brown both had two.

Mathis handed out five assists. Webb recorded seven rebounds and four blocks.

Simmons cited Mathis for her assists as well as Coggins, Webb and DeGraffenreid, who all had three assists.

The Lady Mustang JVs are 10-8 after a 40-36 win behind 22 points from Cayla Cucumber. They led at quarter breaks by scores of 13-6, 28-17 and 35-31.

"They played hard," Coach Kim Hardy said. "It can take a toll on you when you play three games in one week. We found a way to pull it off."
