Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Darrell Crowe

Darrell Edward Crowe, 41, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Bigwitch Baptist Church with the Revs. James Sneed and Denny Crowe officiating. Burial was at Crowe Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Cherokee and was a manufacturing machinist. He was a son of Roland and Marilyn "Sis" Crowe.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandmother, Laura Hornbuckle; two sons, Randall and Ethan Crowe; and one brother, Samuel Crowe.

Moody Funeral Home and Crematorium was in charge of arrangements.

Stella Sheehan

Stella Frady Sheehan, 75, of Russell Cove Road, Waynesville, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Dellwood Baptist Church with the Revs. Jason Ledford, G.W. Jameson and Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, in Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

She was born in Cocke County, Tenn. and lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was a member of Dellwood Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a daughter of the late Garland and Dorothy Plemmons Frady.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Russell, Inez Franklin and Donna Lee Frady; two brothers, Charlie Frady and John Lee Frady; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas C. Sheehan; two daughters, Shirley Stamey of Marion and Thomasine Riddle, of Sylva; three sons, Bruce Sheehan of Lake City, Fla., Donald Ray Sheehan of Balsam and Terry Lynn Sheehan of Waynesville; one sister, Francis Ryder of Chesnee, S.C.; three brothers, Clinton "Cat" Frady of Waynesville, Eugene Frady of Hudson and Wilbur Dean Frady of Sherrills Ford; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Jackson County Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, NC 28779.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Mary Pannell

Mary Alice Pannell, 59, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Fernandez and Rich Peoples officiating. Burial was in Addie Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Earl Buchanan, Dewey Buchanan, Cody Pannell, Bill Bradley, Phillip Pannell and Lloyd Brooks.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church and a daughter of the late Vernon and Jessie Mae Johnson Pannell.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Furman Pannell; and one sister, Pauline Brooks.

Surviving are one sister, Jackie Buchanan of Sylva; and two brothers, Buddy Pannell of Sylva and Kenneth Pannell of Robbinsville.

Memorials may be made to the family.


Herbert Vogel

Herbert William Vogel, 75, of Sandbrook Lane, Sylva, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005.

Asheville Area Alternative Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.


Audrey Stephens

Audrey Houston Stephens, 89, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, in a Hendersonville health care center.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home and Crematorium. The Rev. Cecil Frady will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Upper Stephens Cemetery.

A native of Macon County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Baxter and Laura C. Houston.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Stephens Sr.; one son, Robert Houston Stephens; and one sister, Ruby Houston Wilson.

Surviving are one son, George Stephens Jr., of Hardeeville, S.C.; one sister, Jean Houston Frady of Tuckasegee; one brother, Ennis Houston of Salem, Ill.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Phyllis McClure

Phyllis Gibson McClure, 65, of Spalding Drive, Sylva, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Lloyd Fish officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.

A native of Blount County, Tenn., she had lived in Jackson County for most of her life. She worked in the personnel department at Western Carolina University and was the daughter of the late James and Juanita Walker Gibson. She was raised by a great-aunt and uncle, Viola and Roy E. Jones.

Surviving are her husband, Joe Bryson McClure; one daughter, Sherry Phillips of Sylva; one son, Brian McClure of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Barbara Ashe

Barbara Greene Ashe, 51, of Mount Zion Church Road, Sylva, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray McCall and Sherrill Ammons officiating. Burial was in Hooper Cemetery in Speedwell with honors conducted by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she worked for the Jackson County Sheriff's Department in the Detention Center. She was a 1971 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School and was a member of Locust Field Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Dale Ashe, who died in 2000.

Surviving are two daughters, April Dawn Ashe Mayer and Erica Leann Ashe Bullock, both of Sylva; one son, Joshua Brandon Ashe of Sylva; her parents, Bill and Betty Hensley Greene of Sylva; one sister, Doris Greene Melton of Sylva; and four grandchildren.

Ted Castano

Theodore "Ted" John Castano, 74, of Sylva's Greens Creek community, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in Loganville, Ga., after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Greens Creek Cemetery with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 106.

He was a native of Fort Myers, Fla., and had lived in Jackson County for 18 years. He was a retired Southern Bell employee with 37 years of service. He was in the police reserves serving 10 years in Miami, Fla., and five years in Charlotte. He was a CPR instructor, a Southern Bell Pioneer, a woodworker and a Navy veteran, having served in Korea. He was a son of the late John Francis and Mable McKeinnley Castano.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Anne Costner Castano; three daughters, Terry Coppaland of Cleveland, Ohio, Vicki Yawn of Charlotte and Kristi Nollen of Loganville; one sister, Patricia McKesson of Lake Wales, Fla.; one brother, Mike Castano of Charlotte; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Betty Ammons

Betty Jean Ammons, 66, of Poquoson, Va., formerly of the East LaPorte community, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Armory Funeral Home with the Rev. William McCarty officiating. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Park.

She was a native of Jackson County, but she lived on Virginia's peninsula for the last 48 years. She retired from Siemens (formerly Bendix) in 2000 after 28 years of service. She was an avid gardener and bird watcher. She was a daughter of the late James R. Carter and Ann Bennett Carter.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman R. Ammons; and one brother, James W. Carter.
Surviving are one daughter, Julie Baker of Poquoson; four sons, Roger Ammons and Jack Ammons, both of Gloucester, Va., Gerald Ammons of Cullowhee and Samuel Ammons of Poquoson; four sisters, Ruth Gregg of East LaPorte, Linda Lovedahl of Caney Fork, Sarah Coggins of Cullowhee and Roberta Stacy of Sylva; one brother, Robert Carter of Sylva; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.


Ralph Watson

Ralph Woodfin Watson, 88, of Portland, Ore., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at his home after a long illness.

Memorial services and burial will be held at a later date in Portland.

He grew up in Glenville's Norton community and was a 1934 graduate of Glenville High School. He served in the Pacific Campaign during World War II. He was an active member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church for 35 years, but became a member of Valleyview Angelical Church later in life. He was a member of the Masons and was awarded his 50-year master pin in 2002. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a son of the late James W. and Etha Watson.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Thad Watson; and three sisters, Alice Woods, Gladys Ridley and Ernestine Chappell.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Delores; two sisters, Dixie Aldredge of Norton and Dorothy Greenwood of Verona Beach, N.Y.; and one daughter, Linda of Portland.


Loran Parris

Loran Walden Parris, 73, of Gibbs Road, Leicester, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral home with the Rev. Garry Rogers officiating. Burial was in Ashelawn Gardens. The Asheville Police Department provided an honor guard.

A native of Landrum, S.C., he was a U.S. Army veteran who served with the Military Police and was stationed in Okinawa. He retired from the Asheville Police Department in 1987 after 28 years of service. He enjoyed gardening and flying and spent a lot of time in the Civil Air Patrol, worked as a dispatcher at Mountain Mobility and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a son of the late Collin Andrew and Vennie Steadman Parris.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Randall Keith Parris; and one brother, Neil Parris.

Surviving are his wife, Irene Crawford Parris; two sons, Scott Parris and Timothy Parris of the home; two brothers, Norman Parris of Sylva and Noah Parris of Leicester; and one granddaughter.

Donna E. "Sis" McDonald Bost, 50, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at her home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Cashiers United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Keener Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Ashe, Darrell Blankenship, Orville Coward Jr., Rick Nicholson, Wayne Nixon, Rick Queen, Kenneth Williams, Tom Dillard and Jerry Prickett.

Born May 8, 1954, in Memphis, Tenn., she grew up in Sylva and graduated from East Carolina University.  After graduation, she worked as a park ranger in Raleigh for 15 years, where she was named the North Carolina Park Ranger of the Year. While in Raleigh, she was very active in the Loaves and Fishes Ministry. For the past few years, she had lived in Glenville and was a volunteer at the Fidelia Eckerd Living Center. She was a daughter of Dot McDonald of Sylva and the late Mackie McDonald.

In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Craig Williams; as well as her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Hennessee and Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm McDonald.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband of six years, Phil Bost; two step-sons, Brian Bost of Wilmington and Jeremy Bost of Raleigh; and two brothers, Mac McDonald of Hartselle, Ala., and C.A. McDonald of Fernandina Beach, Fla.
