Megan Owens, Nick Cox take titles at conference swim meet

Megan Owens and Nick Cox both won two events Saturday to highlight Smoky Mountain's showing at the Mountain Athletic Conference Swim Meet held at the Waynesville Fitness Center.

Owens won the 100 freestyle in 56.69 to break the school and conference record of 56.83 held by 2004 SM graduate Allie Lewis.

Owens also took the 50 free in 25.66 and has met regional qualifying times in all individual events.

Smoky Mountain's 400 free relay team took first place in Saturday's Mountain Athletic Conference Meet. The unit was comprised of, from left: Nick Cox, Kyle McCay, Nick Savell and Grant Schallock.

Cox won the 200 individual medley in 2:10.06 and the 100 backstroke in 58.93.

He was also part of the 400 free relay team that won in 3:50.85. He was joined by Grant Schallock, Kyle McCay and Nick Savell as the unit took 10 seconds off its previous best time.

The men were fourth while the Lady Mustangs placed fifth.

"The performance was the best I've ever seen my kids have," Coach Sandy Wade said. "We did really good tapers all last week."

Roberson won the men's meet with 436 points to 409 for Asheville. Franklin was third at 389 followed by SM (234), Tuscola (210), East Henderson (134) and North Buncombe (126).

Roberson also won the men's meet with 519 points to Tuscola's 382. Asheville was third at 368 followed by Franklin (280), SM (229), North Buncombe (142), East Henderson (54) and Erwin (4).

Others who placed for the Mustang men included:

200 medley relay – Cox, Bryon Houghton, Savell and Will Cowan, fourth, 2:00.34.

200 free – Cowan, 11th, 2:29.03; McCay, 12th, 2:30.53.

50 free – Schallock, third, 25.97.

100 butterfly – Savell, third, 1:05.50.

100 free – Schallock, third, 1:01.44; McCay, seventh, 1:04.40; Houghton, 12th, 1:05.91.

500 free – Cowan, 11th, 7:21.34; Anthony McDowell, 13th, 7:35.16.

200 free relay – Houghton, McCay, Cowan and Schallock, sixth, 1:54.94.

100 breaststroke – Houghton, 10th, 1:25.38; Grayson Cooper, 12th, 1:36.00.

Others placing for the Lady Mustangs included:

200 medley relay – Hazel Brewin, Owens, Chesney Gilleland and Carrilea Potter, fourth, 2:13.32.

200 free – Brewin, sixth, 2:28.65; Kaitlyn Kluge, 12th, 2:40.41.

200 IM – Nikki Lookabill, 12th, 3:00.37.

50 free – Gilleland, eighth, 28.10; Potter, 19th, 30.03.

100 free – Potter, 11th, 1:09.37; Sarah Thompson, 14th, 1:14.81.

500 free – Gilleland, second, 6:11.28; Nozomi Kikuchi, 11th, 7:32.53.

200 free relay – Gilleland, Brewin, Potter and Owens, third, 1:55.09.

100 back – Brewin, 14th, 1:25.87; Thompson, 16th, 1:30.50.

100 breast – Kluge, ninth, 1:26.38; Lookabill, 12th, 1:28.72.

400 free relay – Thompson, Paige Roberson, Kikuchi and Kluge, fifth, 5:02.34.

Wade noted that Brewin took nine seconds off her previous best time to qualify for the regionals in the 200 free. The coach said Savell knocked six seconds off his previous best time to become a regional qualifier in the 100 fly.

The Western Regionals are set for Friday, Feb. 4, at the Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatic Center.
