Man remains in jail after Monday assault
By Lynn Hotaling
A Cullowhee man remained in jail Tuesday after a Monday morning domestic violence incident on Speedwell Road.
Initial reports indicated there had been an assault on the road, leaving a woman lying on the road and a man carrying a hatchet fleeing the scene, said Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
When officers arrived, however, the victim, Carmen Acevedo Noyola, 36, also of Cullowhee, had limped back to her residence. A neighbor helped law enforcement personnel pinpoint her residence, Lillard said.
Noyola suffered minor injuries and abrasions but refused medical treatment, Lillard said.
Arrested was Noyola's husband, Margarito Vega Acevedo, 49, who was located near the Catamount Peak apartment complex, Lillard said.
Acevedo is charged with assault on a female and is being held on a $1,500 bond, Lillard said.
The couple were apparently following each other in separate vehicles at the time of the incident, Lillard said. When Acevedo stopped, Noyola stopped also and that's when the altercation occurred, he said.
Noyola said her husband tried to strike her with the hatchet but did not succeed, Lillard said.
