Fire destroys mobile home

By Carey Phillips

A malfunctioning wood stove is believed to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a mobile home just off N.C. 107 in the Tuckasegee area last week, according to William Frady, assistant chief of the Cullowhee Fire Department.

Scotty Messer, who lived in the mobile home, was cutting wood on a nearby mountain when the blaze broke out, around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, Frady said.

"Upon arrival, the trailer was fully involved," Frady said. "Part of it had spread to the bank in back of the home. The Forest Service was there to help deal with it."
