DeGraffenreid breaks own scoring mark against East
Cetera DeGraffenreid broke her own school record by scoring 46 points in Friday's 90-54 Mountain Athletic Conference rout of East Henderson at the SM gym.
DeGraffenreid, who twice scored 45 points last year as a freshman, hit 17 of 24 field goals, including six of seven three-pointers. She was perfect in six trips to the foul line.
"Cetera just had a great performance," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "She was red hot from the start. Even after she would sit down, she would come back into the game and be just as hot. It was a special night for her."
Kristine Webb and Leslie Mathis added 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the Lady Mustangs, who are third in the MAC at 8-3.
Carmen Peek paced the Lady Eagles with 19 points, and Emily Crigler had 13.
"We got off to a tremendous start and never let up," Simmons said. "We were really clicking on all cylinders."
With DeGraffenreid leading the way, the Lady Mustangs came out smoking. She scored 12 as her team jumped to a 17-1 lead with 5:34 to play in the first quarter.
She finished the opening period with 18 points, and SM led 25-11.
A pair of three-pointers by Mathis keyed a 12-2 spurt for a 46-17 lead with 3:29 on the clock.
East scored the final seven points of the half but still trailed 46-24.
The Lady Mustangs started the second half on a 10-2 run, including seven by DeGraffenreid, to lead 56-26 with 4:17 to play in the third stanza.
The Lady Mustangs led 69-36 entering the final period following Ashley Coggins' three-pointer with four seconds to go.
The game's biggest lead was 87-50 on Rachel Stewman's 18-footer with two minutes left.
After sitting out a majority of the fourth quarter, DeGraffenreid returned to the court and displayed a flair for the dramatic as she broke her record with a three-pointer in the final seconds.
Webb hit seven field goals and two free throws. Mathis made six field goals, including two three-pointers, and a foul shot.
Ameka Buchanan netted four points, Coggins finished with three, and Stewman, Kelli Woodard and Amy Haggard all had two.
Webb pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked four shots. Mathis handed out six assists.
The Lady Mustang JVs won 36-22. East led 7-3 after the first quarter before SM moved in front 21-11 at halftime and 29-17 through three periods.
Tara Maloy scored nine points for the Lady Mustangs.
"We won although we did not play to our potential," Coach Kim Hardy said.
