Davidson rolls by WCU
Davidson led from start to finish in rolling to an 80-57 Southern Conference basketball victory over Western Carolina on Jan. 19 before 2,017 fans at the Ramsey Center.
Brendan Winters scored 20 points for the Wildcats. He was joined in double figures by Ian Johnson with 15, Jason Morton with 11 and Logan Kosmalski with 10.
The Catamounts were led by Rans Brempong with 17 points and Trey Hopkins with 13.
WCU played without leading scorer and rebounder David Berghoefer, who missed the game due to back spasms.
Ten straight points, including four by Winters, resulted in a 26-11 lead on two free throws by Kosmalski at the 8:48 mark.
Johnson's four points sparked a 13-1 run for a 46-21 margin with 46 seconds on the clock.
Davidson led 46-23 at intermission.
The game's biggest lead was 66-33 after Winters capped a 10-1 run, including four by Matt McKillop, at the 11:49 mark.
The Wildcats shot 46.2 percent from the floor while holding WCU to 39.1 percent.
Kosmalski's nine rebounds helped Davidson to a 39-30 advantage on the boards. Brempong and Jared Outing matched that total for the Cats.
Western turned the ball over 20 times compared to Davidson's 16.
Completing the WCU scoring were Outing with seven, Antonio Russell with six, Corey Muirhead and Terrence Woodyard both with five, Kyle Greathouse with three and Lunzaya Nlandu with one.
