Catamounts defeat Wofford to snap eight-game losing streak

Antonio Russell and Trey Hopkins both scored 17 points Saturday helping Western Carolina snap an eight-game losing streak with an 80-75 Southern Conference basketball victory over Wofford before 2,177 fans at the Ramsey Center.

Lunzaya Nlandu added 14 points for the Catamounts (6-14, 1-6), and David Berghoefer had 11.

The Terriers were led by Eric Marshall and Greg Taylor with 16 points each. Tyler Berg netted 11, and Sam Daniels and Adrien Borders had 10 apiece.

Wofford scored the game's first six points, but the Cats answered with eight in a row, including five by Russell, for an 8-6 edge at the 16:46 mark.

WCU used another 8-0 run to take a 42-28 advantage on Russell's three-pointer with 49 seconds to play in the half.

The margin was 42-29 at intermission.

Five straight points by Hopkins extended the lead to 54-37 with 13:35 to play in the game.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Marshall capped a 10-2 spurt cutting the gap to 56-47 at the 11:53 mark.

The Terriers continued to rally and trailed just 67-65 on Borders' layup with 5:54 on the clock. They again came within two at 76-74 on Byron Fields' trey with 1:14 to play.

Hopkins hit two free throws with 47 seconds left, and Russell went one of two from the line with 24 seconds to go keeping the Cats on top.

Western shot a sizzling 68 percent from the field in the first half and finished at 54.5 percent. Wofford made 45.8 percent of its field goal tries.

The teams battled to a 32-32 standoff on the boards. The Cats were led by Kyle Greathouse with seven while Berg had seven for the Terriers.

Western committed 19 turnovers, and Wofford had 14.

Completing the WCU scoring were Jared Outing with seven, Greathouse with six, Negus McKenna with five, Rans Brempong with two and Eric Wilson with one.
