Balanced attack keys SM to victory over winless Eagles
Smoky Mountain kept East Henderson winless on the basketball season with a 68-41 Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday at the SM gym.
The Mustangs, who are 2-9 in the MAC, displayed a balanced scoring attack. John Salzano had 15 points followed by Cory Siler with 14 and Deron Fowler with 13.
Siler was the top rebounder with 12.
Chris Harris led the Eagles with 18 points.
"I was pleased with our effort," Coach Scott Hartbarger said. "We played so unselfish. We gave up good shots for great shots. It was the best game we've played in a while."
Behind Siler's four points, the Mustangs broke out of the gate in a hurry and led 11-1 with 4:48 to play in the first period.
East did not have a field goal in the first four and a half minutes.
SM led 19-8 at the quarter break.
Nine straight points built the margin to 34-14 on Siler's two free throws with 2:26 remaining in the half.
The Mustangs were up 38-21 at intermission and took a 52-33 lead into the fourth period.
Nine consecutive points, all from the foul line, resulted in the game's largest lead, 66-38, with 50.5 seconds to go.
Salzano hit three field goals and nine foul shots. Siler made three field goals and eight free throws. Three of Fowler's five field goals were treys.
Cody Maney finished with nine points, Dustin Nicholson scored six, Tyson Crawford and Martin Davis both had five, and Bryan Panther hit a free throw.
The Mustang JVs pulled out a 31-30 win. After a 9-9 first quarter tie, East led 13-10 at halftime and 23-19 through three periods.
SM's John Brown scored seven points.
"They never quit," Hartbarger said. "We were 12 down at one time. We went to a half court trap that gave them some trouble."
