Byrdell Davis
Byrdell Nations Davis, 91, of Whittier, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Hensley Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating.
A native of Jackson County, she was a seamstress, a floral designer and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Kimsey and Sarah Jones Nations.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gomer Davis, three brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are one daughter, June Cabe of Sylva; three brothers, John Nations of Seattle, Wash., Fred Nations of Aberdeen, Wash., and Raymond Nations of Waynesville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Charles Simpson
Charles L. Simpson, 59, of Camp Creek Road, Whittier, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home and Crematorium with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native of Washington, D.C., he was an employee of Caterpillar in Franklin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the son of the late Charles W. and Alma Loraw Simpson.
Surviving are his wife, Denise Simpson; three daughters, Amanda Perry and Kristi Stewart, both of Winder, Ga. and Kimberly Ellsworth of Swansboro; one step brother, Gary Lucas of Oakton, Va.; and eight grandchildren.

Regan Rayburn
Regan Lee Rayburn, 54, of Sylva, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Annie Bryson
Annie Lee Freeman Bryson, 79, of Riverdale, Ga., formerly of Jackson County, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Dallas C. Wilson officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, she had worked at Western Carolina University in housekeeping. She was the daughter of the late Jewel and Anna Hike Freeman.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Bryson; and one brother, Perry Freeman. Surviving are one daughter, Anna Geraldine Beechum of Fayetteville, Ga.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Ethel Sutton
Ethel H. Sutton, 83, of Sylva, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, after an extended illness.
Private graveside services were held Saturday, Jan. 15.
She was the wife of C.M. "Bud" Sutton, the mother of Charles B. Sutton, and sister of Bonnie Cunningham and Margaret Turpin.

Bessie Brooks
Bessie Sutton Brooks, 86, of Dillsboro, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home and Crematorium with the Revs. Roy Burnette and Rich Peoples officiating. Burial was in Franklin Cemetery.
She was born Jan. 25, 1918, and was a lifelong resident of Jackson County. She retired from Skyland Textile Co. in 1980 and was a member of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church for 72 years. At the church she served as a youth and adult Sunday school teacher and was a member of the WMU. She was a daughter of the late Dallas and Amanda Brown Sutton.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert Brooks, who died in 1991; two brothers, Realis "Chic" and John A. Sutton; and two sisters, Effie and Kathryn Sutton.
Surviving are her daughter, Libby Knight of Dillsboro; one brother, Burch Sutton of Charlotte; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Kimburlee Whitfield
Kimburlee Smith Whitfield, 39, of Cullowhee Mountain Road, Cullowhee, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Fall Cliff Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Holden officiating.
She enjoyed collecting angels and loved poetry and Christian music.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Sutton.
Surviving are her husband of 22 years, Michael Douglas Whitfield; one daughter, Kristi Whitfield of the home; one son, Brandon Whitfield of the home; her parents, Harry and Susie Standifer Smith of Greenville, S.C.; four sisters, Gloria Holliday of Anderson, S.C., Barbara Asheworth and Patricia Foster, both of Greenville, S.C., and Tammy Moore of Florida; and two brothers, Harry Smith Jr. and Dennis Sutton of Greenville, S.C.

Rosie Bradley
Rosie Gilliland Bradley, 96, of Willets Road, Sylva, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was in Love Cemetery.
A native of Kentucky, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a member of Ochre Hill Baptist Church and she enjoyed quilting, crocheting and basket making. She was a daughter of the late Ben and Martha Mason Gilliland.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Bradley, who died in 1973, an infant daughter, Joyce Marie, and one granddaughter.
Surviving are two daughters, Leonora Bradley of the home and Helen Crisp of Balsam; five sons, Glen Bradley of Whittier, Ben Bradley and Harold Bradley, both of Sylva, Cisco Bradley of Columbus, Ind., and Harlo Bradley of Grant Pass, Ore.; one sister, Ellen Gilliland of Asheville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Betty Bitler
Betty Bitler, 85, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005 in Seminole, Fla.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 15, at Beach Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in St. Pete Beach, Fla. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Born in Muskogee, Okla., she lived semi-annually in Sylva and Largo, Fla. She was a retired elementary school teacher for Hernando County, Fla.
Surviving are her husband, Calvin; two daughters, Susie Guthrie of Seminole and Laurie Coyle of Treasure Island, Fla.; four step-daughters, Susie Darling of Corrales, N.M., Vickie Friar of Elmore, Ohio, Claudia Reimer of Helena, Ohio, and Marshelle Lorentz of Luckey, Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Buford Raby
Buford Winston Raby, 57, of Cherokee, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel with the Revs. Jim Parks and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in the Bradley Family Cemetery with military rites conducted by Steve Youngdeer VFW Post 8013.
Pallbearers were Roy Bradley, Darrin Bark, Roger McCoy, Brian Teesateskie, Sam Toineeta, Tony Standingdeer, Ben Fuller, Moe Kanott, Simon Shell and Rink Shell.
He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He worked for RC Masonry and Arrowhead Masonry for the last 12 years. He was a son of the late Ted and Evelyn Raby.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, John Raby.
Surviving are his wife, Jacquelyn Bradley Raby; one daughter, Dusti Bradley; three sons, Scott Raby, Wesley Raby, and Jeff Raby, all of Pickens, S.C.; nine sisters, Joyce Bradley and Cynthia Grant, both of Cherokee, and Brenda Jones of Tuckasegee, Janie Waldroop of Franklin, Lottie Beck of Towstring, Lorraine Beck of Whittier, Opal Johnson of Easley, S.C., Linda Hughes of Pickens, and Ruth Ammons of Bryson City; six brothers, Donald Raby of Whittier, Thomas "Tink" Raby and Robert Raby, both of Pickens, and Roger Raby, J.D. Raby and Jerry Raby, all of Cherokee; and eight grandchildren.
