Smoky Mountain swimmers win meet at East Henderson

Smoky Mountain's men's swim team won a meet Friday at East Henderson while the women placed second.

The men compiled 338 points to 244 by Tuscola. North Henderson was third at 171 followed by East Henderson (169) and North Buncombe (149).

"The boys did really well," Coach Sandy Wade said. "I was real proud of them. I think they were surprised."

She noted one of the reasons for the success was that teams were limited in the number of swimmers they could enter in an event. That helped the Mustangs, who do not have as many swimmers as several other squads.

Speaking of the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs, Wade said, "Half of the kids did not practice at all over Christmas break. I was pleased they did as well as they did."

Nick Cox led the way for the men by winning two individual events and being part of two winning relay teams.
