Aiding tsunami victims
To the Editor:
In a recent e-mail conversation with Dr. Bill Aldis, formerly of Sylva and currently the World Health Organization representative to Thailand, I posed the question as to which, in his opinion, were the most effective organizations delivering aid (to the victims of the recent catastrophic tsunami).
While praising all and any efforts, Dr. Aldis' response was that UNICEF and Doctors without Borders are "the two that most consistently deliver" what they claim to.
Like many in Jackson County, I want to help in some way and would like to donate to an organization that "delivers."
This is not to downplay what any other organization is doing, only to give the perspective of someone who, in my opinion, is more in touch with the reality of the situation.
Both organizations Dr. Aldis suggested have Web sites – www.unicef.org and www.doctorswithoutborders.org – where donations can be sent.

Get involved with new library committees
To the Editor:
I write to urge all library patrons to attend the first organizational meeting for the new Jackson County Public Library.
The meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m. at the library. Sponsored by the Jackson County Library Board, the purpose of the meeting is to bring the community together to organize into working groups to further the development of the new library. Citizens will have a choice as to where they wish to place their efforts. Are you more interested in fund raising or project design? Do you want to help with small community fund-raisers or grant writing? Do you want to help make plans for space and design? Do you want to work toward challenging all of the citizens served by this library to become involved? Do you have ideas as to how to ensure a continuous effort over the long haul?
At the January meeting, you will have an opportunity to indicate your interests.
I also urge all citizens and library patrons to bookmark www.newjacksonlibrary.org. This Web site is devoted to reporting information to the public about plans and activities for the new library. Each group and organization that works on behalf of the library has a featured spot. Please visit frequently for updated information. And join the e-mail list so that you might receive a monthly newsletter.
