Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Christopher Hayes

Christopher David Hayes, 29, of Sylva, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at his residence.

Graveside services were held at noon Thursday, Dec. 23, at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, with Benjamin McEntire officiating. The U.S. Marine Corps provided full military honors.

He was born in Amarillo, Texas, on Sept. 10, 1975 and was the son of James David Hayes and Diane Grimes Hayes. He was a U.S. Marine air traffic controller.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Fallon Nicole Hayes, and one son, Jacob Maynard Hayes of the home.

Douglas Lanning

Douglas F. Lanning, 85, of Hwy 107 North, Glenville, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Hamburg Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Matt Ledbetter and Ray Lewis officiating. American Legion William E. Dillard Post performed the flag presentation and committal. Burial was in Hamburg Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ray Crawford, Hubert Bryson, Felix Villarreal, Tony McCall, Steve Harris and Verner Rice. Members of his Sunday school class were honorary pallbearers.

He was a native of Jackson County and a veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served during World War II. He was a farmer and was a son of the late Luther and Lonas Stephens Lanning.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Arnold Lanning, six sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mary Young Lanning; one son, Norman Lanning of Glenville; one brother, James Lanning of Mount Vernon, Wash.; two grandsons; and three great-grandsons.

Julia Polk

Julia Polk, 83, of Blustery Ridge, Sylva, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home and Crematorium with the Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Cincinnati, Ohio at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 30).

She was a native of Washington County, Ga., and was a graduate of Macon (Ga.) Hospital School of Nursing, Mercer University, and the University of Georgia. She was retired from the Mercy Health System in Cincinnati as a nursing supervisor. She taught nursing for 30 years. She enjoyed flying and was the pilot of her own plane and was a member of the Aircraft Owner and Pilots Association. She was also a member of the Macon Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She was a daughter of the late Wade and Willie Lee Franklin.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis G. Polk; one son, Robert G. Polk; four brothers, J.W. Franklin, Isadore Franklin, Charlie M. Franklin, Wade H. Franklin; one sister, Willie B. Slingerland; and two infant sisters who died at birth.

Surviving are one son, Daniel L. Polk of Texas; one daughter, Carol VanCleve of Sylva; one brother, Billy Franklin of Warner Robins, Ga; and nine grandchildren.

Ruth Wike

Ruth Jones Wike, 72, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Presbyterian Hospital.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. today (Thursday), Dec. 30, in the chapel of Raymer Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at 4 p.m. in Wike Cemetery, Cullowhee.

She was born June 11, 1932, in Maxton. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church and worked as a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Jones.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Vernal Lee Wike; one son, Greg Wike of Charlotte; two daughters, Gina Leonard of Greensboro and Gwen Hopkins of Greenville, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville is in charge of arrangements.


Johnny Oates

123004oates02Johnny Lane Oates, 58, of Matoaca, Va., died Friday, December 24, 2004, at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Va., of which he was a member, with Dr. Jeffrey Ginn officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Va.

He was a native of Sylva and a son of the late Clint L. Oates. He was a retired manager, having managed the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers baseball teams, leading them to three division titles and was named American League Manager of the Year. Combined he spent more than 35 years in professional baseball as a player, coach and manager. He played in two World Series.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Jackson Oates; his mother, Madie L. Oates of Supply; one sister, Shelba Thornton of Supply; one brother, Eddy Oates of Luray, Va.; two daughters, Lori Everhart of Chesterfield, Va., and Jenny Riggs of Colonial Heights; one son, Andy Oates of Chester; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Johnny Oates Memorial Fund, c/o Bank of McKenney, P.O. Box 370, McKenney, VA 23872. Contributions to this fund will go to brain tumor research and patient care.

The Colonial Heights chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.



Charles Styles

Charles H. Styles, 54, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at University Medical Center in Lebanon, Tenn.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at the Church of God of Prophecy in Lebanon, where he was a member and deacon, with the Revs. George Wallace and Marion Caruthers officiating. Burial was in the Wilson County Memorial Gardens.

He was a native of Jackson County and was a banker for more than 28 years. He was an avid golfer and was the son of the late Thad and Bonnie Gunter Styles.

Surviving are his wife, Edith Gann Styles; two daughters, Traci Walker and Allison Walker, both of Lebanon; one brother, Clifford Styles of Gallatin, Tenn.; two sisters, Pauline Beck of Whittier and Mildred Sutton of Dillsboro; and five grandchildren.

Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home of Lebanon was in charge of arrangements.

Joanne Cagle

Joanne Cagle, 71, of Cactus Loop, Sylva, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, in the chapel at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Shane Danner officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Kim Hooper, Earl Hooper, Chig Cagle, G.W. Revis, Hayes Queen and Hugh Moon.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She retired from GTE as a central office equipment technician and was a Communication Workers of America secretary for 15 years for Local 3673. She was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church and a daughter of the late David Porter and Dorothy Wilde Cagle.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Lou Painter.

Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy Hooper Franklin of Sylva; and one granddaughter.

Bernita Ledbetter

Memorial services for Bernita Sutton Ledbetter, 91, of Willets Road, Sylva, who died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, at Sylva Church of Christ with Vernon Dugger and Derek Gant officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Jack Ledbetter Scholarship Fund, c/o Sylva Church of Christ, Storybook Lane, Sylva, NC 28779.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Wilson Ensley

Paul Wilson Ensley Jr., 50, of 314 Belt Dr., Lowell, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Fraley Memorial Baptist Church in Gastonia with the Revs. Perry Huffstetler and Charles Keller officiating. Burial was in Gaston Memorial Park.

He was born March 3, 1954, in Gaston County. He was a son of the late Paul Wilson Ensley Sr. and Minnie Lee Bailey Ensley.

Surviving are one son, Paul Wilson Ensley III of Dallas; three brothers, Ronnie Graham of Belmont, Garland "Jack" Ensley of Kings Mountain, and Lonnie "Baby Joe" Ensley of Smyre; and two sisters, Polly Braddy of Gastonia and Beverly Elliott of Port Orange, Fla.

Memorials may be made to the family of Paul Wilson Ensley Jr. Memorial Fund at 1503 S. York Road, Gastonia, NC 28052.

Richard Wood

Richard McKinley Wood, 70, of Whittier, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City, with the Revs. Ned Pressley and Mark Sale officiating. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.

He served in the Navy and retired from Daniel's Construction Company as an iron worker with 35 years of service. He worked for the State of Franklin program. He was an avid CB Radio operator and was a son of the late Felix and Bonnie Styles Wood.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Burlin Wood and a sister, Martha Sue Roper.
Surviving are one sister, Louise Nations of Washington; one daughter, Linda Williams of Otto; one son, Ricky Wood of Otto; and three grandchildren.


Thomas Robinson

Thomas Calvin Robinson, 85, of 256 Brevard Road, Asheville, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Mission Hospitals after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, in the chapel of Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain with Dr. Jack Innes and the Rev. Walter Peck officiating.

A native of Jackson County, he had resided in Asheville most of his life. He attended Emma School and was a Baptist. He entered the Navy in 1938 and also served in the Army from 1940-41. He was awarded the American Defense Medal. He was a life member and former commander of VFW Post #891 and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He received the N.C. Master Plumber License #765 in 1942 and worked for a number of plumbing companies for many years before opening his own company, Tom's Plumbing and Heating Company. He also served as the plumbing inspector for Buncombe County from 1960-62 and later served as housing safety officer for the City of Asheville. He was the youngest child of the late Samuel Jefferson and Mary Lawing Robinson.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Leona Gibson, Roena Kent and Rosa Ingle; and five brothers, Gordon, Ralph, Sam, Gilbert and Marion Robinson.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Agnes Moore Robinson; and two daughters, Ann Reynolds and Carol Robinson, both of Asheville.
