As 2000 draws to a close, a look back reveals change in the air throughout Jackson County.
Though shifts won't actually occur until 2001, these potential alterations of the county's landscape dominated this past year's news.
Perhaps the biggest change looming is for county government as Jackson switches from an elected to an appointed county manager. Except for two months in 1998 when the county had an interim appointed manager, the elected commissioners' chairman has served as county manager since 1932. Come July 1, a full-time appointed county manager could be in place, bringing Jackson County government in step with that of the state's other 99 counties.
