Nona Griffin
Nona M. Griffin, 87, of Indian Hills Road, Whittier, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Tsali Care Center.
A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Sherrill Cemetery with the Revs. Steve Phillippi and Cody Lambert officiating.
She was a native of Swain County and had lived most of her life in Cherokee. She was the daughter of the late Luther and Nannie Lambert Allison.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Leonard Griffin.
Surviving are two sons, Paul Royce Griffin of Lake Lure and Everett Griffin of Leicester; and two grandsons.

Joseph Najera
Joseph A. Najera, 85, of Candy Lane, Sylva, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Skyland Care Center.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
He was a native of Puerto Rico and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a self-employed cabinet maker and enjoyed wood working. He was a son of the late Alfredo and Rosario Torres Najera.
He was also preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Najera; two sons, Joseph Najera of Elverta, Calif., and John Najera of Burlington; four daughters, Sue Giduck of Kemp, Texas, Mary Perez of North Miami Beach, Fla., Amy Firestine of Sylva, and Jane Haggard of Reagan, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Danice Williams
Danice Williams, 68, of Posey Blanton Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at her residence.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Ochre Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Blanton officiating.
She was a native of Tampa, Fla., and a graduate of Hillsborough High School. She was a registered nurse who worked at hospitals in the Tampa area. She had been a Jackson County resident for many years. She was the daughter of the late Maxine Sharp Wheeler and the granddaughter of the late Maude Sharp Finch.

James Mills
James Ray Mills, 78, of Ashe Loop Road, Sylva, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in Lexington.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home and Crematorium with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating.
He was a native of Jackson County and was retired from Clark's Auto Parts as an auto mechanic. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a son of the late Fred and Lucy Ashe Mills.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eddie Jean Cowan Mills; and two brothers, Herbert and Claude Mills.
Surviving are one son, Thomas Cowan of Sylva; one daughter, Lisa Ann Figueroa of Lexington; one brother, Pete Mills of Sylva; and three grandchildren.

Elva Smith
Elva Ossian Smith, 91, of Sylva, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
The family will hold a private graveside commemoration in Dallas, Texas, where her husband is buried, at a later date.
She was a native of Stanton, Iowa, and was the youngest child of Albert Gustaf and Emma Charlotte Ossian. She was a graduate of an Omaha business school. She worked as a secretary in Nebraska and California before moving to Hawaii. She was in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served as a secretary there throughout World War II. She returned stateside after the war with her career military husband, she followed him to stations in Virginia, New Mexico, Japan and Florida before he retired to Texas, where she lived until 1997. At that time she moved to North Carolina. She was a founder and supporter of the Leon, Texas Historical Society and was also a supporter of the Swedish Heritage Center in Stanton. Since coming to Jackson County, she was a member of the Golden Age Center's writing group and participated in the Senior Olympics in the writing category.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Earl L. Smith Jr., seven brothers, one sister, one half-sister and one step-sister.
Surviving are one son, Earl L. Smith III of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Penny Smith of Sylva; one sister, Linda Christensen of Omaha, Neb.; and one half-sister, Vicki Shalberg, of Omaha.

Judy Teague
Judy Teague, 59, of Wike Cemetery Road, Cullowhee, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Spiritual Light Center in Franklin with Elder Carol Marsh officiating.
She was a native of Bristol, Va., and had been a resident of Jackson County for several years. She was an accountant. She was a daughter of the late Grant and Grace Stepp Wells.
Surviving are her husband, David Teague; two sons, d'Armond Speers of Denver, Colo. and Daniel Earl Speers of Morristown, N.J.; two sister, Drexie White of South Port, Miss., and Marilyn Dale of Bristol.

Nellie McClure
Nellie Shelton McClure, 52, of Jonquil Drive, Sylva, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at her residence.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Fairview Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating.
She was a native of Jackson County and had worked at Western Carolina University. She was the daughter of the late John Walter and Grace Mae Moore Shelton.
Surviving is one brother, Walter Shelton of Tuckasegee.

Clifford Ammons
Clifford Asbury Ammons, 70, of Randall Road, Waynesville, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at his residence.
Graveside services were held at noon Saturday, Dec. 18, at Fairview Memorial Gardens with American Legion William E. Dillard Post Chaplain Roy Burnette officiating.
He was a native of Jackson County and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Dayco Industries of Waynesville as a machine operator and was a newspaper carrier for the Asheville Citizen-Times. He was a member of Cedar Baptist Church. He was the son of Don Ammons of Sylva and the late Otelia Ashe Ammons.
In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by two sons, Randall Lee Ammons and Clifford Alan Ammons.
Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Dessie Barnes Ammons; one daughter, Linda Rich of Waynesville; three sisters, Kathleen Ensley and Helen Bryson, both of Sylva, and Mary Jo Harris of Tuckasegee; one brother, Carnell Ammons of Tuckasegee; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Thomas Bard
Thomas Robert Bard, 58, formerly of Swain County, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, in a Henderson County hospital.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Rev. Max Cochran officiating.
A native of Swain County, he was formerly employed in the furniture business in Hickory. He also worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency, Pratt and Whitney Air Craft in Connecticut, and Fortner Construction Company. He was a Baptist and was a son of the late Robert and Charlotte Barker Bard.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Johnnie Winfred Bard.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Robert Bard Jr. of Florida, Bobby Thomas Bard of Hickory, and Isaac Bard of Gastonia; one daughter, Bonnie Jean Bard of Florida; one step-son, Joseph Mosley of Clover, S.C.; two sisters, Christabel S. Hall of Bryson City and Rose Hyatt Fritts of Fletcher; two brothers, Prince Bard of Bryson City and Grady Bard of Old Mystic, Conn.; and two grandchildren.
