Area churches plan Christmas services

122304websterbaptist02A number of Jackson County churches have announced plans for Christmas Eve services, and several will conduct services on Christmas Day as well.

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church will hold a Christmas Eve worship service Friday, Dec. 24, at 5 p.m.

Church members will light a tree decorated with Chrismons, a type of Christmas ornament made from Christian symbols such as the cross, fish and stars. Chrismons were first made by a woman in Danville, Va., in 1940. Shepherd of the Hills' Chrismons were made by church members in the 1970s.

The church will hold a Christmas Day service Saturday, Dec. 25, at 9 a.m.

For more information, call the Rev. Timothy Rall at 586-2084.

Webster United Methodist

Webster United Methodist Church will host the 23rd annual "A Christmas Eve in Webster" Friday, Dec. 24, at 5:30 p.m.

The Webster and Jackson County historical associations will sponsor the concert, which will feature the church's historic 1881 Estey organ. Kentucky-based music teacher and church organist Robert Young will perform for his third year as concert musician.

As is tradition, Webster resident Howard Allman will read the Christmas lesson, assisted by Tessa Rodes and Shawna Allman. Audience members will light candles and exit the church singing "Silent Night." Hot cider will be served.

The event is held in memory of former Webster postmaster Mildred Cowan, who served as organist the first year the concert was held. Cowan was a founding member and early president of the Webster historical group.

Webster churchwomen bought the Estey organ in 1881 for $59 and had it brought by train from Vermont to Asheville, then by wagon over the Balsam Mountains to Webster, which was then the seat of Jackson County.

For more information, call 586-0921.

Double Springs

Double Springs Church of God will hold a Christmas Eve candlelight communion service Friday, Dec. 24, at 6:30 p.m.

The church is located at the top of Cullowhee Mountain Road.

Refreshments will follow the service.

St. John's Episcopal

St. John's Episcopal Church in Sylva will hold its Christmas Eve service Friday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

Alliance Bible

Alliance Bible Church in Dillsboro will host a Christmas Eve candlelight service Friday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

Victory Baptist

Victory Baptist Church on Cowee Mountain will hold its annual Christmas Day service Saturday, Dec. 25, at 10:30 a.m.

The service will feature music by Mountain Faith, a Christmas message by the Rev. Benny Bagwell and a phone call to the Framptons, a family of missionaries in South Africa.

Zion Hill Baptist

Zion Hill Baptist Church will present a Christmas play, "The Man Who Came to Christmas," on Sunday, Dec. 26, at 6 p.m. at the church.

The play was previously scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 19, but was postponed because of snow.
