Jessie Bishop
Jessie Ashe Bishop, 89, of Wake Robin Road, Cullowhee, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, in Mountain Hospice Solace in Asheville.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Joe Yelton and Robert Fernandez officiating. Burial was in David Rogers Cemetery.
She was born in Sylva, the daughter of the late Enis and Maude Ashe. She was the widow of Daniel Charlie Bishop, who died March 27, 1984.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Bishop Queen, and a granddaughter.
Surviving are one daughter, Wanda Strait of Readstown, Wis.; three sons, Charles Enis Bishop of Enka, Grover Lloyd Bishop of Cullowhee and James Robert Bishop of Salisbury; six grandchildren; four step-grandsons and several great-grandchildren.
Doris Spivey Doris Spivey, 76, of Lake Monroe, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, in the chapel of Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home in Sanford, Fla., with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Park Cemetery.
She was born on March 31, 1928, in Sanford. She was a homemaker and member of First Church of the Nazarene of Sanford. She often visited the Jackson County area and attended Ochre Hill Baptist Church while she was here.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Melvin H. Spivey; her mother, Gertrude LeGer of Sanford.; one brother, Dewey LeGer of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Esther Lane, of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mary Davis of South Carolina; one son, Jack Spivey of Groveland, Fla.; three daughters, Carol Burfield of Sanford, Darlene Grooms of Groveland and Sharon Hall of Sanford; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Frankie Nations
Frankie Roper Nations, 74, of Shoal Creek Road, Whittier, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at Whittier Church of God, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Ned Pressley, Tim Pressley and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Lovelace, Bobby Hampton, Bruce Martin, R.L. Passmore, Doug Noble and Chris Bailey.
She was a native of Swain County, where she lived most of her life. She was the daughter of Alma Barnes Roper of Sylva and the late Carl Roper. She was a textile worker.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband of 56 years, Weldon Nations; one son, Charles Nations of Whittier; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
David Buchanan
David Buchanan, 40, of Rocky Branch Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 16), at Wilmot Baptist Church with the Revs. Earl King, Lewis Crisp and Oliver Dills officiating. Burial will be in the Buchanan Family Cemetery.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a truck driver and a machine operator with Buchanan & Sons Concrete Inc. He was an avid outdoorsman and was the son of Jimmy Lee Buchanan of Whittier and the late Betty Jean Green Buchanan.
Surviving in addition to his father are four sisters, Peggy Jean Buchanan, Mary Katherine Buchanan and Joan Buchanan-Pittman, all of Whittier, and Joyce Dyer of Bryson City; and two brothers, Tony Lee Buchanan and Ryan Keith Buchanan, both of Whittier.
The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Herman Jones
Herman Freeman Jones, 80, of Yorktown, Va., died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, in North Hampton Convalescent Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with Michael Germano officiating. Burial was in the Brown Family Cemetery.
He was a native of Jackson County, but had lived in Virginia since 1951. He was retired as a supervisor for the Newport News Shipyard since 1989, after 38 years in the X-11 department. He was a son of the late Ben and Lottie Jones.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Jones, and one sister, Eleanor Williams.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Bonnie Greene Jones; two sons, Merwin Jones of Fairfax, Va. and Mark Jones of Smithfield, Va.; one daughter, Joyce Moore of Yorktown; two brothers, Elmer Jones of Sylva and A.D. Jones of Raleigh; one sister, Ruth Mostellar of Sylva; and seven grandchildren.

Annie Austin
Annie Dee Mills Austin, 85, of the Willets community, Sylva, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. David Hoyle and Tim Bartroum officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
She was a native of McDowell County and spent most of her life in Jackson County. She was a member of Ochre Hill Baptist Church and was a daughter of the late Spon and Kate Dyer Mills.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde M. Austin, who died in 2003; three brothers, Adam James Mills, Johnny Mills, and Calvin Mills; and two sisters, Hattie Florence Mills and Grace Sneed.
Surviving are one daughter, Carrie B. Trantham of Sylva; four sons, Edd Austin of Sylva, Harold and Paul Austin, both of Waynesville, and Floyd Austin of Candler; one sister, Mamie Henry of Sylva; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Clyde Coggins
Clyde Freeman Coggins, 80, of Cullowhee Mountain Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Don Bates and Benny Bagwell officiating. Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rodrick Ramsey, Shannon Ramsey, Steven Hooper, Shane Coggins, Stacy Coggins and Matthew Coggins.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a retired farmer and logger and a son of the late Victor and Annie Connor Coggins.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Redell, Lawton and Cecil Coggins; and four sisters, Melva Coggins, Winnie Jenkins, Hazel Fetner and Azalee Kite.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Gertrude Christine Webb Coggins; three sons, Shirley Coggins of Whittier, Ellis Coggins of Sylva and David Coggins of Colonial Heights, Va.; two daughters, Annie Ramsey of Cullowhee and Ella Hooper of Rock Hill, S.C.; one brother, Mark Coggins of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Trudi Blaine of Waynesville; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Lovicia Cole
Lovicia Lambert Cole, 62, of Troy Martin Road, Whittier, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Sherrill Ammons officiating. Burial was in Campground Cemetery.
She was a native of Swain County, but had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She worked in the cloth department at Wal-Mart and was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Jack and Selma Messer Lambert.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Dennis.
Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Tommy Cole; two sisters, Katherine Lambert of Whittier and Betty Smith of Bryson City; and three brothers, Bill Lambert of Bryson City, Claude Lambert of Richfield and David Lambert of Graham.
