Final weekend to see Dillsboro aglow
By Carey King and Derek Hodges
If you didn't make it this past weekend to Dillsboro's 21st annual Luminaire, this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10 and 11, is your last chance.
Starting at dusk, merchants will set more than 2,500 luminary candles on their sidewalks, then offer holiday treats to visitors while a variety of entertainers perform around town.
Guided by holiday lights, out-of-town shoppers make their way up the stairs to The Christmas Shop this past Friday (Dec. 3) during the first weekend of Dillsboro's Luminaire. "We always come for this. It's great," said Cindy Powell of Franklin, the woman heading up the steps first. "It's nice that a little town can do this." – Herald photo by Derek Hodges
The Dillsboro Merchants Association sponsors the annual Christmas event.
Though this past weekend drew a "pretty good" crowd, Luminaire's second weekend is usually bigger than the first, said Rob Sharp, manager of Sandy's Sampler.
Karen Barnes, owner of Riverwood Pottery, coordinates entertainment for the event and is especially looking forward to hearing the children's chorus from Cherokee Elementary School perform Friday.
"They'll sing some songs in the Cherokee language," Barnes said.
The weekend's entertainment schedule follows below. One group, husband-and-wife harmonica duo Wooden Wind, will perform before dusk Saturday. They will appear at Treehouse Pottery from noon to 2 p.m.
At Herald press time, a performance time for the Smoky Mountain High School chorus had not been set.
