SM games are moved to Asheville tonight

Smoky Mountain's basketball games against Asheville, scheduled for Friday at the SM gym, will instead be played tonight (Thursday) at Asheville.

The contests will mark the Mountain Athletic Conference openers for both schools.

Games on Jan. 14 will be played here instead of at Asheville as originally scheduled.

The Lady Cougars are the two-time defending state 3-A champions and have three players who have signed with Division I colleges They are Rashanda McCants (North Carolina), Danielle Burgin (UNC-Charlotte) and Lauren Powell (Western Carolina).

McCants is the sister of current UNC men's star Rashad McCants. Burgin is recovering from a shoulder injury, and her status for the game is not known.

The scheduling changes were made due to Asheville's football team playing Friday in the state 3-A semifinals.

The games's could have been played here Thursday, but SM Athletic Director Si Simmons said he preferred to preserve a Friday home game when attendance is typically better. The January games here are set for a Friday.

SM has only two other Friday home games the remainder of the season.
