Despite sub-freezing temperatures, a large, enthusiastic crowd lined Sylva's Main Street Tuesday night (Nov. 30) for the town's annual Christmas Parade. Led by Grand Marshal Amanda Dills of Cullowhee, the reigning Miss Asheville, and the Smoky Mountain High Marching Mustangs, this year's event boasted more than 70 entries, said parade coordinator Betty Foxx of Sylva Insurance.
Three floats were singled out for special recognition: Krismart for best of theme; town of Sylva for most creative; and Jackson Paper, named judges' choice. Judges were Livingston Kelley of Livingston's Photo, Jeanne Paquin of Main Design and Howard Alligood of Arsenal Artifacts.
"I was real pleased with the crowd and with all the favorable comments I heard," said Foxx. "I want to thank everyone who participated, as well as Jeff Carpenter of the county recreation department and Chief Jeff Jamison and the Sylva Police Department. We couldn't have done it without them."
Others on the SPIR promotions committee who were instrumental in the parade's success were Judy LaPoint of Judy's Bridal, Joyce Moore of City Lights, SPIR past President Phyllis Foxx and SPIR President Jay Spiro. Prior to the parade's start, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Chamber of Commerce Director Julie Spiro helped the crowd fight the chill by serving hot chocolate, compliments of the chamber and SPIR.
