Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Emerson Lusk

Emerson R. Lusk, 84, of Cashiers, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Highlands–Cashiers Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Cashiers Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Art Fowler and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was in the Lake Toxaway Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a member of the Glenville Masonic Lodge 551. He was the son of the late Sexton and Ida Viola Breedlove Lusk.

Surviving are one sister, Eunice Clements of Westland, Mich.

Olin Ensley

E. Olin "Tater" Ensley, 86, of Monteith Branch Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Rich Peoples and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was to be in Old Field Cemetery.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. He retired from Mead Corporation after 43 years of service. He was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church where he was a deacon, nursery dad for 27 years, Sunday school clerk, and teacher in the beginner department. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and an avid outdoorsman and a gardener. He was the son of the late Haynes and Selma Carnes Ensley.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Stillwell, and a brother, Logan Ensley.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Madge Parker Ensley; three sisters, Helen Walker, Sue Cowan and Bobbie Gunter, all of Sylva; and one brother, Mack Ensley of Battleground, Wash.

Memorials may be made to the Old Field Cemetery Fund or Scotts Creek Baptist Church Jordan Monteith Memorial.

Mary Huskey

Mary Cochran Huskey, 70, of Maryville, Tenn., died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with the Rev. Tom Hodges officiating.

She was a member of Broadway Baptist Church and a graduate of Everett High School. She lived in Sylva for 20 years where she worked for Contel as a telephone operator. After retiring, she spent the last 14 years in Maryville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, H.T. and Hettie Cochran; and one sister, Betty Jo Griffith.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Leonard Huskey; one daughter, Teresa Chastain of Maryville; one son, Jim H. Huskey, of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.


Rachel Queen

Rachel Bishop Queen, 60, of Starmount Drive, Asheville, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, in an Asheville hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hominy Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin, Ga.

She was born in Cullowhee and was a daughter of Jessica Ashe Bishop and the late Charles Bishop.

She was a professor at West Georgia College in Carrolton, Ga. She graduated and earned her Ph.D. in early childhood education from Western Carolina University. She was a co-founding member of Taxpayers For Accountable Government.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Jack L. Grogan who died in 1989, and Arlis O. Queen, who died in 2003.

Surviving in addition to her mother, are one daughter, Jessica Skinner of Hendersonville; one sister, Wanda Strait of Readstown, Wis.; and three brothers, Bud Bishop, Grover Bishop and James Bishop, all of Cullowhee; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hominy Baptist Church, 135 Candler School Road, Candler, NC 28715.

Bridgette Gibson

Bridgette Gibson, 45, of Cashiers, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Highlands–Cashiers Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the Upper Zachary Cemetery in Cashiers. The Rev. Art Fowler officiated.

She was a native of Oconee County, S.C., and was the daughter of the late Melvin and Sue Kirby Gibson.

Surviving are an aunt and uncle and several cousins.

Xavier Otter

Xavier Johnson Otter, 20, or Blueberry Place, Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Old Antioch Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with Rev. Denny Crowe officiating. Burial will be in Birdtown Cemetery.

He was a native of Jackson County and was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Naomie Kanott and Wanda Shelton.

Surviving are his wife, Ashley Murphy Otter; his parents Henry Otter Jr. of Cherokee and Brenda Kanott of Mestas, Colo.; one daughter, Rebeccah Otter of Sylva; two sons, Michael Otter of Cherokee and Javien Otter of Sylva; and three brothers, Brad Kanott, J.L. Wolfe and Kerry Hawk Otter, all of Cherokee.

Coleman Allison

Coleman Scroop Allison, 78, of Franklin, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, in a local health care facility.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m, Saturday, Nov. 20, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Burrell officiating. Burial was at East Fork Cemetery.

He was a native of Jackson County and a son of the late Cole Burch and Minnie Sophie Buchanan Allison. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was self–employed in maintenance.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Otis Ray Allison; and one sister, Nancy Agnes Allison.

Survivors include several cousins.

Herb Burgess

George Herbert "Herb" Burgess, 71, of Cherokee, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in Tsali Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Acquoni Baptist Church. Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Burgess Family Cemetery with graveside rites by the Steve Youngdeer Post 143 of the American Legion, of which he was a member.

He was a son of the late George Alger and Etta Leola Bradley Burgess and was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee. He served on the board of the Cherokee Boys Club for 34 years and served as president for more than 24 years. A 1952 graduate of Cherokee High School, he served in the Navy from 1952-56 when he served in combat in Korea on the John W. Weeks Destroyer. He was an electrician for the Cherokees from 1958-60. He was a Cherokee Police Officer from 1960-62 and a BIA bus driver from 1962-64. He had worked with the Boys Club since 1964, as shop department manager for 34 years. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and served as chairman of the Tribal Elections Board for many years. He was instrumental in building the Tsali Care Center.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Sgt. John Burgess.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie McGee Burgess; three sons, Dennis, Charlie and Brandon Burgess, all of Cherokee; two daughters, Jeanne Burgess and Vicki Ledford, both of Cherokee;  two sisters, Catherine Smith and Vivian Owl of Cherokee; and one brother, Ralph Burgess of Cherokee; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lalah Lambert

Lalah B. Lambert, 83, of Rough Branch Road, Cherokee, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Tsali Care Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Tow String Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Doug Mathews will officiate. Burial was in Tow String Cemetery.

A native of Tennessee, she had lived in Jackson County for the past 25 years. She was the daughter of the late Richard Bales and Nancy Ogle Eslinger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharlotte Lambert; two brothers, Grady and Shady Bales; one sister, Dixie Bales; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Amos Lambert; three daughters, Beulah Young, Phyllis Tomlinson and Shirley Reagan, all of Cherokee; three sons, Willie Lambert and Charles Lambert, both of Cherokee, and Grady Lambert of Florida; 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Frank Oberle

Frank Stephen Oberle, 51, of Glenville, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in Glenville Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Ray Lewis officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he had lived in Jackson County for the past nine years. He was a contractor for Structure Contracting Inc., the son of Jack Steven Oberle of Glenville and the late Corrol Savastano Puckett.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife of 18 years, Lorraine Ladall Oberle; one daughter, Bretney Oberle of the home; one son, Frank Steven Oberle of Smithfield, Va.; three sisters, Dawn Anderson of Shelby, Tuyett Edwina Case of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Kathleen Oberle of Tampa, Fla; and two brothers, Jerry and Rick Oberle, both of Cullowhee.

Charlotte Hornbuckle

Charlotte Gertrude Reed Hornbuckle, 75, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, after a long fight with diabetes at Skyland Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Lambert officiating. Burial was in Rogers Family Cemetery.

She was born on March 30, 1929, in Cherokee to the late Adam and Margaret Catt Reed. She was a member of Wrights Creek Baptist Church for 45 years. She graduated from Cherokee Boarding School in the late 1940s.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Larens Hornbuckle; three sisters, Suzanne Meinschein, Nell Rogers and Gladys Griffin; and one brother, Moody Reed.

Surviving are one daughter, Marguerita Owl of the home; one half-sister, Mary Ellen Thomas of Phoenix, Ariz; and one grandson.
