Herald to close for holiday; early deadlines in effect - The Sylva Herald will publish early next week due to the Nov. 25 Thanksgiving holiday. Special newspaper publishing deadlines will be in effect. Holiday deadlines will be: Society news – Noon today (Thursday, Nov. 18), All other news – Noon Friday, Nov. 19., Classified and legal advertising – Noon Friday, Nov. 19, Display advertising – Noon Monday, Nov. 22, The Sylva Herald printing plant and    newspaper will close for two days –   Thursday and Friday, Nov. 25 and 26 – to allow employees to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with their families....


Downed tree causes fatality - A tree that fell in the road blocking N.C. 107 south of Cashiers late Sunday afternoon indirectly led to the death of a Glenville man. Francis Steven Oberle, 53, died in the 4:25 p.m. accident near High Hampton Inn, according to trooper Derek Robinson of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The tree was blocking both lanes, and a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck owned by Juan Devoid Edwards of Cullowhee was stopped in the northbound lane, Robinson said. Edwards had gotten out of the truck and had walked around to look at the tree, the trooper said....
