DAVID BREWIN of Cullowhee sent us a note expressing his appreciation to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office for their help in recovering his stolen computer. "Special thanks go out to Detective Jim Clawson for his respectful and courteous service that he afforded me throughout the whole process," Brewin wrote. "When I talked to the Dell representative, she told me that they rarely get this kind of good news on computer theft, and that the return of mine was the first one they had heard of in quite a while. We're really lucky to have such fine law enforcement in this county."

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY is currently holding a fund-raising raffle with prizes of two children's playhouses. Two raffle drawings will be held, one for each playhouse. SYLVIA SENBEL of Charlotte, formerly of Whittier, graduated from the University of North Carolina's College of Health and Human Services in May with a master's degree in social work. While at UNC-Charlotte, she was a member of the graduate honor society and maintained a 4.0 grade-point average. Senbel is a 1997 graduate of Western Carolina University and attended Sylva-Webster High School. She is the daughter of Odeen Barker of Whittier and Lee Barker of Bryson City and the wife of Dr. Abdenabi Senbel. The couple has two sons, Amir and Khalil.
OLD ST. NICK will be coming to North Carolina's mountains this December with regular appearances aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. From Dec. 1-24, the railroad's "Santa Express" will depart each Tuesday through Friday at 10:30 a.m.; Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. During the festive two-hour round trip to the North Pole (a.k.a. Whittier), . Santa Claus himself will also greet each passenger and hand out a souvenir Christmas gift. Hot chocolate and holiday cookies will be served at the depot before departure. GSMR is also offering morning brunch or afternoon high tea in vintage dining cars on weekends and selected weekdays. Rates for the Santa rides are $28 for adults and $16 for children, with discounts available for scouts and school groups.
