Smoky Mountain wrestlers set to begin season here Tuesday
Smoky Mountain's wrestling team will open its season at home Tuesday at 5 p.m. with a tri-match against Christ School and Towns County (Ga.).
The Mustangs were slated to tune up for the season with a 10-team scrimmage today (Thursday) at East Henderson.
"I'm real pleased with how things are going," Coach Tom Sargent said. "This is my third year. Knowing the kids helps a lot. We're probably two weeks ahead of where we were last year."
He has been pleased with the positive attitude, which he attributed to the leadership of the upperclassmen.
Sargent is hoping to fill all weight classes this year. He's still looking for a 189-pounder.
Senior Brendan Ferguson returns at 160 pounds after wrestling in the state tournament last year.
The Mountain Athletic Conference is expected to be tough with Enka and Tuscola among the strongest teams, Sargent said.
