Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Helen Klavohn

Helen Dorothy Klavohn, 85, of Sylva died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in the Garrett Hillcrest Mausoleum Chapel in Waynesville.

She was born Dec. 13, 1918 in Geneseo, Ill., to the late James and Rena Holmstrom Kay. She worked for 15 years as a neonatal registered nurse. She was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

Surviving are her husband, Richard Klavohn; one son, Terry Klavohn of Whittier; one sister, Mary Wilson of California; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital Oasis Temple, in Charlotte.

Garrett Funerals and Cremations was in charge of arrangements.

Rezell Mathis

110404mathis02Rezell Mathis, 79, of Vader, Wash., died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Longview Hospice.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Fir Lawn Funeral Chapel, Toledo, Wash. with the Rev. Larry Bentz officiating.

She was born Sept. 14, 1925 in Tuckasegee to Ralph and Catherine Rigdon. She had been a resident of Vader for 49 years. She married Jasper H. Mathis on Dec. 20, 1940, in Pickens, S.C. She was retired from Weyerhauser, a member of the Vader Assembly of God Church, a sports fan, and a church volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; one son, Ike Joe Mathis; one brother, J.M. Rigdon; and one sister, Charlotte Parker.

Surviving are two sons, J. Keith Mathis of Winlock, Wash., and Michael R. Mathis of Maple Valley, Wash.; two sisters, Edna M. Corson of Tuckasegee and Mattie Price of Arden; one brother, Alvin Rigdon, of Tuckasegee; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Longview Hospice or Vader Assembly of God.


Betty Borders

Betty Parnell Borders, 85, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Sylva, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at her residence.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Jackson County and she moved to Florida in 1956.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Joseph P. Borders; one daughter, Lynda Zachary Nore of Roswell, Ga.; and two granddaughters.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Jason Crow

Jason Crow, 32, of the Big Y community, Cherokee, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, in Cherokee.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Crow Family Cemetery. The Revs. Denny Crowe and Noah Crowe officiated.

He was a member of Old Antioch Church and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1990. He was an artist known for his tattoo designs.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Albert Crow, and grandmother, Regina Crow.

He is survived by his mother, Charlotte Crow George of the home; three sons, Albert Jason Crow, Dezmond Tre Crow and Aadin Elias Allison, all of the home; two brothers, Danny Crow and Nathaniel "Bunsey" Crow; two half-brothers, Wesley Eugene Howell and Robert Howell; and one sister, Squinnie Lossiah.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


William Rice Jr.

William Earvin "Bill" Rice Jr., 39 of Little Savannah Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Mike Fox officiated. Burial was in the Picklesimer Cemetery.

He was a native of Macon County, but had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a self-employed caretaker and handyman, a member of Cashiers Baptist Church, an avid outdoorsman and a woodworker. He was a son of the late William Earvin Sr.

Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Nancy Swink Rice; his mother, Nancy Passmore Rice; two sons, William Cody Rice and Dylan W. Rice, both of the home; two sisters, Melissa Ledford of Cullowhee and Lynn Rice of Sylva; and one brother, Stephen Rice of Cashiers.

Memorials may be made to the Glenville–Cashiers Rescue Squad.

Melton–Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Vernon Haskett

Vernon Haskett, 80, of Cardinal Drive, Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Nov. 11) at Lovedale Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Farmer and Cecil Frady officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites being conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Sylva American Legion Post 104, of which he was a member. Pallbearers will be deacons of the church.

He was a native of Jackson County where he lived the past 39 years. He worked at Sylva Auto Parts for 40 years until his retirement and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church where he was a deacon, assistant Sunday school superintendent, choir member, former Sunday school superintendent and he sang with the Jim Haskett Choir. He was a gardener who loved gospel music and was a member of Woodman of the World. He was a son of the late Rev. Bill Edd and Laura Shook Haskett.

He was preceded in death by one brother, James L. "Jim" Haskett and one sister, Minnie Cabe.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mildred Buchanan Haskett; one sister, Ethel Haskett of Maryland; and two brothers, Odell Haskett of Sylva and Orville Haskett of Winston-Salem.

The family was scheduled to receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 7-9 p.m. at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.
