An extra-territorial jurisdiction – a boundary up to one mile outside town limits in which residents must obey Sylva zoning rules – is instead the option town leaders plan to explore.


WWII vets who left school to fight will receive diplomas - As part of a statewide effort to recognize those who interrupted their education to fight for their country during World War II, Jackson County Schools will award high school diplomas to 16 veterans during a 7 p.m. ceremony Thursday, Nov. 11, at Southwestern Community College. Officials discuss draft subdivision ordinance - One week after adding three positions to local inspections departments, county officials  spent part of last Tuesday evening (Oct. 26), working through a revised draft of the subdivision ordinance that some say may necessitate more inspectors. Discussion between county commissioners and planning board members centered around the number of lots that constitute a subdivision. Planning board members have done extensive work on the proposed ordinance that now, including appendices, is 52 pages long. The length of the draft and the amount of regulation it would impose seemed excessive, said Commissioner Brian McMahan....
