EAST LAPORTE TIRE on N.C. 107 near its intersection with Caney Fork Road is featured in this week's Business Spotlight. Remember that winter is on the way and have your  tires checked by the professionals at East LaPorte Tire to make sure that you don't get stuck out in the cold this winter.



J.C. PENNEY'S and T&D'S GIFT SHOP will host next week's Jackson County Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours. The event will be Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 5:30 p.m. at 1262 West Main Street in Sylva. To R.S.V.P., call 586-2155 by Nov. 8.


SYLVA'S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE is set for Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. Those wishing to sign up to be in the parade or rent a commercial float may call Betty Foxx at 586-2512 during the day or 506-4595 in the evenings. Theme for this year's parade will be "A Candy Cane Christmas," and Sylva Garden Club members will serve as grand marshals.


SHOWTIME TANNING is now open at Frontier Shopping Center in Cherokee. Owners are Tracey and John Parker, who also own Showtime Movie Rentals. See their ads for details on the opening special available to the first 50 customers to sign up for a package.


LOVE'S CHAPEL United Methodist Church will hold its annual bazaar, flea market and poor man's dinner Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Menu includes pinton beans, potatoes, slaw or kraut, cornbread, cobbler and drink at a cost of $4 for adults and $3 for children under 12.


CULLOWHEE VALLEY'S rescheduled fall festival will be Saturday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event will feature inflatable rides, cakewalks, bingo, face-painting, prize drawings, carnival games and, weather-permitting, a dunking booth. Lunch, snacks and baked goods will be available. Purchase of a $5 wristband will allow the wearer to ride the inflatables as many times as desired. Admission is free.


WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY is planning "Purple Pride Week" Monday, Nov. 8, through Sunday, Nov. 14. WCU will meet rival Appalachian State on Saturday, Nov. 13.

TIMES LISTED last week for Catch the Spirit of Appalachia's gingerbread church clinic have changed. The workshops will be three consecutive Saturday afternoons, Nov. 6, 13 and 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Cullowhee Baptist Church.


HELEN BRYSON of the Department on Aging sent us a note saying the group's recent yard sale raised almost $3,000 for the agency's efforts at building wheelchair ramps, completing home safety repairs and carrying out its ongoing nutrition program. Bryson also expressed thanks to Charlene and Michael Grant and Dan Hooper for donations and to Robert Hall of Asheville, who let the DOA use his building (the old Highland Laundry) for the yard sale.


ANOTHER THANK YOU came in from eight-year-old Rebecca DeHart of Becca's Bears. She thanked the ladies of the hospital auxiliary, Fairview second-grade teacher Della Reeves, Margie Stephens and Marvin Schade for their help and also thanked all the individuals who brought stuffed bears for the project.


DILLSBORO will hold its annual Festival of Lights and Luminaries two Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 3-4 and Dec. 10-11, beginning at 5 p.m. each day. For more than 20 years, Dillsboro merchants have provided refreshments and entertainment during their annual Christmas open house as a special gift to the community.
