Lucinda Reed
Lucinda B. Reed, 83, of the Wolfetown community of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Betty Drake, Don Ensley and James "Bo" Parris officiating. Burial was in Reed Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Timpson and Ollie Taylor Bird. She was a member of the Qualla Arts & Crafts Co-Op and a basket maker. She was a member of the Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was Sunday school superintendent, teacher and a faithful member. She was retired from The Cherokees and as an outreach worker for Tsali Manor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Reed, who died in 1994. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Ollie E. Reed and Sharon Faye Reed; two sisters, Annie B. Sherrill and Betty Catolster; and three brothers, William, John and Sherman Bird.
She is survived by six daughters, Bessie Welch, Matilda Calhoun, Iva Gentry, Linda Davis, and Julia Lossiah, all of Cherokee, and Mary Kathryn Grauman of Deer River, Minn.; two sons, William Dennis Reed Sr. of Cherokee and Robert Bruce Reed of Cherokee; two sisters, Martha Queen of Cherokee and Nellie Trull of Canton; a brother, Edwin Bird of Cherokee; 29 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Rezell Mathis
Rezell Mathis, 79, of Vader, Wash., died Oct. 24, 2004, at Longview Hospice.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 27, at the Fir Lawn Funeral Chapel, Toledo, Wash., with the Rev. Larry Bentz officiating.
Born Sept. 14, 1925, in Tuckasegee to the late Ralph and Catherine Rigdon, she married Jasper H. Mathis on Dec. 20, 1940, in Pickens, S.C. She was a retired laborer from Weyerhauser and a member of the Vader Assembly of God Church, where she often volunteered. A sports fan, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She had lived in Vader for 49 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; one son, Ike Joe Mathis; and one sister, Charlotte Parker.
Surviving are two sons, J. Keith Mathis of Winlock, Wash., and Michael R. Mathis of Maple Valley, Wash.; two sisters, Edna M. Corson of Tuckasegee and Mattie Price of Arden; one brother, Alvin Rigdon, of Tuckasegee; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Longview Hospice or Vader Assembly of God.

Harold Sitton
Harold Eugene Sitton, 58, of the Savannah community, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Dan Stiles and Charles Jackson officiating. Burial was at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites provided by the U.S. Navy, William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104 and the Savannah Fire Department. Pallbearers were members of the Savannah Fire Department.
A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and the Savannah Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a former captain and served on the board of directors. He was an avid outdoorsman and a retired route salesman with National Linen with 30 years of service. He was a Navy veteran, serving in Vietnam, and a 1965 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School. He was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Sitton.
Surviving are his mother, Edna Sitton Curtis of Sylva; his wife of 34 years, Helen Swink Sitton; one son Michael Eugene Sitton of Sylva; one sister, Barbara Parris of Sylva; and three grandchildren.

William Rice Jr.
William Earvin "Bill" Rice Jr., 39, of Little Savannah Road in Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Mike Fox officiated. Burial was in the Picklesimer Cemetery.
He was a native of Macon County, but had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a self-employed caretaker and handyman, a member of Cashiers Baptist Church, and an avid outdoorsman and woodworker.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Earvin Sr.
Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Nancy Swink Rice; two sons, William Cody Rice and Dylan W. Rice, both of the home; two sisters, Melissa Ledford of Cullowhee and Lynn Rice of Sylva; and one brother, Stephen Rice of Cashiers.
Memorials may be made to the Glenville–Cashiers Rescue Squad.

John Steward
John Michael Steward, 60, of Cherokee's Qualla community, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in a Swain County health care facility.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Whittier Missionary Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Larry Nations and Matthew Shuler officiated. Burial was in Campground Cemetery with Masonic graveside services conducted by the Oconee Lodge 427.
A native of Indiana, he had lived in Western North Carolina since 1963. He was the son of the late John Martin and Clara Nicholas Steward. A veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Vietnam, he was a member of the Oconee Masonic Lodge 427 and the Tuckasegee Chapter 16 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a founding member of Street 'Tiques Asheville Car Club.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rometta Douthit Steward; daughter, Brandi Michaellena Steward of the home; and brother, Nicholas Steward of Whittier.

Ben Nations
Ben A. Nations, 104, of Whittier's Shoal Creek ommunity in , died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services were scheduled for today, Thursday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Revs. Mike Nations, Ned Pressley and Doyle Maney will officiate with burial in Swain Memorial Park. The family was scheduled to receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Bob and Mamie Holtzclaw Nations. He was a farmer and logger and a member of the Whittier Church of God. He was the husband of the late Martha Phillips Nations, who died in 1994
He is survived by five daughters, Myrtle Brooks of Franklin, Virgie Loftis of Bryson City, Frankie Speas of Lexington, Lexie Edge of Cherryville, and Barbara Ledford of Easley, S.C.; four sons, Millard Nations of Canton, Arvil Nations of Whittier, Earl Nations of Clyde, and Lon Nations of Whittier; three sisters, Mamie Bowers of Mooresville, Ann Higdon of Bryson City and Evelyn Higdon of Ellijay, Ga.; one brother, Joe Nations of Bryson City; 32 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 37 great-great-grandchildren.

Dewey Broom
Dewey Broom, 85, of Broomsage Ridge, Tuckasegee, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Ammons officiating. Burial was in Broom Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Sols Creek Baptist Church and attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church. He was a retired construction worker for Blythe Brothers.
A son of the late John and Estella Wilson Broom, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Queen Broom, who died in December 2003; two sisters, Mary Massingale and his infant sister, Martha Broom; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Surviving are six daughters, Susie Melton and Audrey Dillard, both of Tuckasegee, Betty Sue Huggins and Lucille Gonce, both of Brevard, and Wanda Prince and Rita Mathis, both of Cullowhee; three sons, Wayne Broom of Tuckasegee, Carroll Broom and Ted Broom, both of Cullowhee; one sister, Ethel Burrell of Sylva; and 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Daisy Lawrence
Daisy Lawrence, 89, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center in Sylva.
Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clark Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in the cemetery in Belmont at a later date.
A native of Jackson County, she was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Christopher and Alice Brown Green.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cliff Lawrence.
Surviving is one daughter, Gail Phillips of Cullowhee; one sister, Hazel Bryson of Cullowhee; one grandson and two great grandchildren.

Hazel Bryson
Hazel Wilson Bryson, age 98, formerly of 174 Welch Street, Waynesville, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with the Rev. Steve Taylor officiating. Burial followed at Wesleyanna Cemetery in Sylva. Pallbearers were Jim Haynes, Scott Guge, Bruce Crawford, Chuck Kirkpatrick, Jerry McFall, and Bill Glance.
A native of Jackson County, she had lived in Haywood County for the past 38 years. She was the oldest member of Antioch Baptist Church. She enjoyed canning and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred R. Bryson, who died in 1988 and two brothers, George and Warren Cochran.
She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Marcus of Waynesville; two step-daughters, Mary Scott, of Austin, Texas and Hiawatha Lesley of Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Delsie and Bessie Cabe, both of Sylva; two grandsons and three great-grandsons.
